This graphic sound effect details two magpies attacking a loudly protesting member of their own species.
At breeding time in spring, some Australian magpies cause concern when they become very territorial. They will attack other birds and unfamiliar humans in defence of their nesting territory. They usually issue initial warnings with loud carolling song, beak-clapping and swooping towards the intruder with noisy wing flaps. If that doesn't work, they swoop closer and closer. Finally, they may attack directly, diving at the the intruder and pecking with their strong beak.
Few humans are seriously injured directly by this - there's at least one case recorded of someone losing an eye - but cyclists and walkers can suffer falling injuries while taking evasive action.
