3.0 - Application Evaluation
To Qualify as an Audio Contributor
Like all of iStockphoto’s royalty-free media, iStockaudio is offered under the royalty-free model. Because all audio on the iStock site is royalty-free, contributors to iStockaudio cannot be members of a performing rights society. This is because performing rights societies such as SOCAN, ASCAP, PRS, BMI and others take responsibility for collecting royalties on their members' compositions. Therefore all creations by a user that is a member of a performing rights organization cannot be considered royalty-free, and would be subject to licensing fees which are not part of the iStockphoto model.
What to Submit
We require iStock contributors to submit 3 samples of your audio work for us to evaluate. The samples provided in your application should be representative of your best work. We want to see how you stand out from the crowd.
The higher the quality of the recording the better chance you have of getting your application approved. Clips should be a minimum of 5 seconds to a maximum of 30 seconds. NOTE: samples and effects can be as short as 5 seconds, but very short samples should have multiple versions (i.e. five versions of a snare drum hit in 5 seconds). In addition, your audio application samples must be in .wav format.
Audio containing lyrical content needs to be free of inflammatory subject matter and must not contain any form of discrimination. Audio received that deals with discriminatory views, sexually explicit words or suggestions of an obscene or pornographic nature will be rejected. Also please refrain from referring to recognizable groups, corporations, or figures/people in any lyrics that are submitted - regardless of ownership.
It is our goal to celebrate independent creativity. We are not looking for pre packaged loop combinations or anything pieced together from someone else's work, so please make sure all aspects of your work is yours.
The following example shows work that was created simply by stitching together a series of another person's creative work. While you may be legally entitled to rework the audio in this way, we will reject compositions that have clearly not been created by yourself.
This is an example of a finished 'Complex Sample' that was created using loops that the user did not originally create.
Below are the specific loops and samples that the composition above was created from. However, since the creator of the full piece did not create the individual samples this composition would not be able to be accepted.
Photo Identification
In order to confirm your identity, iStockphoto requires one piece of government issued ID (i.e., drivers license or passport). iStock respects the privacy and the integrity of any information that you provide us as a member of this site. We will not sell or rent your personal information to any other party. We employ managerial and technical measures to ensure that your information is secure. For example, all personally identifiable information is maintained behind a firewall.
If you are a minor in the country, province or state in which you live, then you can only use this site with the approval of a parent or guardian.
Account Information
The personal information in your account must be full and accurate in order to upload files to iStockphoto. Ensure that your first and last names are correct. Mailing address should be complete and current (in order to deliver royalty payments). If this information is incomplete or incorrect, your application will be declined.
