Description

A Santa Cruz Island fox (Urocyon littoralis santacruzae) in Scorpian Canyon, on Santa Cruz Island California. The island fox is an endemic species to the California channel islands with unique sub-species on the 6 largest of the California Channel Islands. They are notably smaller in size than the mainland gray fox they are decended from, and with a richer rust accent coloring. The island fox is a federally listed endangered species that has been recovering in the past decade thanks to ecological restoration efforts on the islands after the fox was nearing extinction levels in the year 2000 due to a variety of invasive impacts that had disrupted food chains in the northern islands, and the introduction of canine distemper virus to the Catalina Island fox population.
