Google Gears is a browser add-on from those smart folks at Google. It's free to install and is available for most versions of Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer.

Gears does several different things to improve your web-browsing experience, and some of these fit particularly well with iStockphoto. So we've added some code so that anyone using Google Gears will see a significant speed upgrade when they browse iStock.

The biggest thing Google Gears changes is the way your browser handles cached items. iStockphoto does a lot of caching – all of our image thumbnails for instance. So Google Gears is perfect for a site like ours.

You certainly don't need to install Google Gears. iStockphoto will continue working just like it always has if you don't. From what we've tested though, iStockphoto works faster with Google Gears.

If you've already installed Gears, or if you decide to go ahead and do so, we'd love to hear about how iStock works for you with it. Please post any comments you've got in this thread.

You can read more about Google Gears & iStockphoto here.

If you already use Google Gears, you probably just got a little pop-up from it asking about allowing access to our site.

Yeah, I did this test:

Do a search for something complicated. Like dog not cat.

Then do another one. Like woman not business or christmas.

Do a few other searches. Then come back and do those initial test ones again. When I come back to dog not cat - it doesn't take any time to load the thumbnails.

The way the developers explained it to me, it really brings you speed on return visits to pages, as your machine already has those cached items already there.

It's saying my browser isn't supported, but I'm running the newest version of Safari (and OS X).

I had the same thing happen to me. I was still able to click the "get gears" button though and download and install it. I know that they only recently updated for the latest Safari - they might not have updated that message.

Just to note: works fine on the Chrome browser too.

I tried that, but it doesn't look like it is updated for Snow Leopard yet. I am running it just fine on FireFox though. Zippy!

Hmm. I'm finding that my advanced search settings aren't sticking now. Is that happening to anyone else?

Hmmm... I clicked yes on the popup and now my control panel settings won't save. It reverted to view only 30 files per page and I can't save it back to 100 per page. I just posted in the help forum before I saw this thread.

ETA: Yes, Roger I didn't see your post first but that's happening to me too.

Same thing here now.  This wasn't happening at first after I accepted the Gears pop-up, only in the last 10 minutes.

Alright, sounds like that's happening to all of us then. I will let the folks at the wheel know. It's a definite problem.

@ Swilmor and GeorgeClerk -it's your Control Panel settings that its happening to? Did it drop your old ones, or is it just that you're unable to save changes?

My portfolio view settings are also reset to default. I tried to change them back to my user default in advanced search box - but can't get them to stick. I'm using Vista Ult 64 FF3.5.

Glad I found this post - It's been driving me mad for the last 20 minutes trying to get them to stick.

Edited for clarity.
