Wow! istock is certainly maturing. It just gets better. One small criticism though, is it just me are the image classifications getting a bit restrictive? They don't seem to have expanded for a while. I sometimes have trouble finding 3 categories appropriate for my pictures. Discuss.

Discuss.

and if we don't?

yeah, I think you may be right, but I also think (hope?) that no one uses the categories to find an image. Many photos are misfiled, and a text search is just better most of the time. But, yes, the categories could use some improvement.

and if we don't?

But you have!

True no-one uses the category search much but we still have to specify them when we upload. I think that some of the misfiling is probably down to the absence of appropiate categories.

D'oh, I thought we HAD to select 3 categories. I'll go with keywords more in future. Cheers!

Btw: Last December the category lists during upload process were different to those in the picture details for approved pictures (e.g. in the upload lists was still a subcategory 3D/rendered or similar, which seemed to be gone when you were looking at a picture after approval). Was this corrected during the re-programming?

I love istock, but I think the categories structure is the weakest feature. The first general level is not great, but somewhat workable. The second level of sub-categories has a lot of problems. Some of them are about right, some too specific, and some too general.

The key is to find logical groupings that are useful to people who are searching, and to divide and sub-divide into groups of images that make sense being listed together. I think that designers should be a key resource in terms of finding out what breakdowns and groupings would be most helpful to them, and how they look for images other than keyword search.

I wonder if it could be redone, and then let folks re-classify their own images. It would take quite a while for everyone to do this. It would only be worth it if the feature is something that gets used.

One way to get the ball rolling would be to ask designers to submit lists of categories that they would find useful.

Check out the Suggestions Forum - this is a topic which has been discussed at length there. In fact, I believe someone submitted a huge list of suggested new categories there.

I never knew that. I thought you were required to pick three. This will help a lot.

Rather than expanding them ad-infinitum, I would have thought it would be better to have fewer but more all encompassing categories.
