Anyone seen the new MacMini?

Certainly not nearly as powerful as a dual processor G5 - it actually looks like a repackaged G4 cube - but its totally affordable. Its the answer to my small budget and massive computer problems...

Oh yeah, they have a $99 iPod now too...

now THAT is COOL! It's like pretty much the equivalent of my old 1.0 G4 iMac in a cute little teeny-tiny package...LOL! Wish we'd waited to buy my ex-boyfriend's daughter her new computer now...this would have been SO much better for her than the nast Windows machine we had to get. Blech!

Looking a the spec's on the MacMini, I see that it comes with 256 megs of ram. I'm not an OSX user, but I understand that this is pretty much the minimum, right? Looking at the options at the Apple store, the upgrade to 512 is pretty reasonably priced, but a full gig of ram costs almost as much as the computer... Any OSX users have any insight as to whether 512 is a usable amount of ram for a fairly heavy photoshop user? Keep in mind, I'd be upgrading from a 300mhz G3 with 700 megs of ram.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

You wouldn't want to use that for heavy photoshopping. However, for photo post-processing, you might get away with 500mb. It's a definite step up from where you were at and you can't beat it for the money...and staying with a mac workflow. heck, the OSX is worth $100 or so, and I think it even comes with iLife.

freakin' brilliant, of course. i'm considering buying apple stock now

yeah, 256 MB under OS X would not be that good. i'm betting third party RAM would be a lot cheaper, though that little box doesn't look so easy to open!

Am I the only person finding Apple's footnotes a little bit odd?

This one has me cracking up:

ipod

And this one is just confusing:

minimac

I think its the good old mac programmer's sense of humor coming back!

Apple have definitely scored big with the announcements at MacWorld.

The MacMini is incredible value - finally, a Mac which can compete in the budget PC world. This is what the market has been waiting for. Pity they have to exclude the Keyboard and Mouse. It would be minimal cost on Apple's part to include them, but if you want to buy them separately they're about $60-$70 each. The display I can understand them selling separately, though - good move to break the two apart for the budget iMac market.

iWork looks awesome, too. A full-feature word processor with cool layouts and template setups for the people who need them, custom tools for more advanced users, plus a wicked presentation tool in Keynote. At last, Apple are going to have a worthy alternative to Microsoft Word, and an app which will run rungs around the fetid dungpile that is PowerPoint!

iLife 5 is a step up and definitely in the right direction for a complete media package. iMovie and iDVD with HD support, GarageBand and now the new Symphony package to give you a full orchestra.

Dayam, looks like I've got to get my credit card out!!

Yay, a new Mac! This one looks pretty cool. I'm tempted to sell my Powerbook and buy one!

Maybe this will tempt some PC users into switching to Macs? (People who already have monitors and keyboards, and are looking to upgrade). Or, a lot of people who may have older imacs can upgrade to this. Hopefully this Mac lasts longer than the Cube!

You'd probably want more than 256 MBs RAM... I had 256, it worked, but it chugged. I just added more and it's a HUGE difference in performance

Yes, the 256MB of RAM will definitely not be enough if you intend to run more than one app at a time in OS X, especially something intensive like Photoshop.

You need at least 512MB to run OS X well. I have 1GB in my Dual 867 G4 and even then it tends to chug a bit if I have several apps open at once and a lot going on.

This iMac isn't meant as a replacement or alternative to Powermacs or high-end Powerbooks. This is a budget model with lower specs, and don't forget that CPU speed and RAM are not the only factors which determine how well a PC performs. You have to compare the L1 and L2 cache sizes and speeds, and the speed of the memory itself. Look at the difference in the data pipes between the G5 Powermacs and the iMacs. These are the things that make all the difference. Apple is doing great bringing something like this to market, but make no mistake, it's not going to be a hugely powerful machine, no way is it going to cut it if you want a high-end desktop video editing suite. And very little in a system like this is going to be customizable or replaceable. The graphics chip is likely built onto the motherboard, so you can't upgrade it, and it's a lower-end chip. It's limited to 1GB of RAM.

Great machine - perfect for homes and personal use - probably not good enough for serious pros.

I'm sure that in not too long there will be an iPod Shuffle mach II with a little LCD screen showing the song title etc... they'll probably also start to bring out new colours like the iPod Mini.

So what colour would yours be?
