Since I haven't been on istock THAT long can the more seasoned folks tell me if it's typical this time of year for things to slow down this much? (at least for me).

Granted, I don't have tons of images in my portfolio yet, but before Christmas I was getting downloads at a small but fairly steady clip. Since the holiday and new year, I've only had one download (low res, old credits used). Getting depressed. :-P

You need more pictures in your portfolio to notice a change... I have 475 images and for me things are rolling along as usual...

I had my best day ever a few days ago. And, apart from the weekends, its been climbing exponentially since the beginning on January.

January has been a banner month, had my biggest day ever last week. The key for me is a diverse portfolio.

Ok, thanks.

Now, I have to be careful how I ask this, cause it might be "too personal" for some (involves money). But here goes...

Of course someone's success on istock is going to depend on how good their images are in general, demand, and diversity (as gmnicholas said above). So it's impossible to get specific numbers on earning as it varies, nor do I WANT anyone's specific numbers at all.

However, in theory, if someone wanted to earn let's say, $50.00 per month in "extra income" using istock - they have a diverse set of decent images, etc.; What is the GUESS by long time users, as to the number of images you would need in your portfolio in order to achieve this financial goal, based on current levels of business here? (does that make sense?). I realize it really does vary a bit, but I'm sure there are roundabout figures people on here have figured out by now such as, "1000 pics in a portfolio can potentially earn $$ to $$ per month", etc. Please again, I really don't want to know anyone's specific numbers (that's like asking about voting and religion to me), but just a rounded figure as to how many pics it does take to get into the $50 a month mark provided they're decent shots in moderate demand.

Greg

It depends on what type of images you shoot.

I had about 200 in my portfolio, when i made that much. But i shoot mainly isolations, and poor ones at that.

It's VERY dependant on images. If you check out zeitgeist you'll see that the number of downloads per file is really high for some people (I don't even make the list).

Last month and this month slow for me. With the new rates and the exclusive bonus I'm getting about the same money as I was in november. If I look at my history I had a drop this time last year too. Trying not to get depressed.

Greg,

I wont be too specific, but currently with 380 images online, I've made over 50.00 this month. Last month was double that, but that was due to the success of a select few of my images. November was just slightly above 50. At the end of November, I had roughly 300 images online.

The pricing structure and exclusivity bonus definately add another layer of complexity to the equation since. The rate of income will vary based on how many total downloads you have and if you are exclusive.

What is the GUESS by long time users, as to the number of images you would need in your portfolio in order to achieve this financial goal, based on current levels of business here? (does that make sense?).

dsteller,

What are your top 5 selling images this month.. I wish Istock would let us quickly see stats on Zegeist (sp?) that would show us the top 5 or 10 downloaded images that day or week. That way, us photographers can start to see what kind of images we need to have in our portfolios for certain times of the year. It will help us prepare specific photography for our customers.. Just my 2 cents.

I now have 258 uploads and make about $42 dollors a month. It's really difficult to say, I tend to get results out of a image only about a month or 2 months after upload, so it will be really difficult to judge or project how much you want.

hey dan,

I figured my january would be sucky, but it has turned out opposite, thus far. I am not really having one file downloaded more than another, though. Nothing really seasonal, other than a basketball pic (an isolated one). My valentines ones are just starting to pick up.

My portfolio is very small (currently 39) and relatively new (I've been a member since feb 2002...just started uploading 3 months ago). That is probably why it is fairly even distribution across the board.

I like the idea of the zeitgeist (also sp? ) being weekly and being able to pull up the histories would be nice at a weekly timeframe.

as my downloads stay at the same rate I need probably around 80 images online to get $50 in a month. But that's not predictable, maybe there are no succesfull images on my new uploads, maybe a very succesfull... it's impossible to predict.

I have about 210 images online and since the summer my earnings have never fallen under 150$/month.
I guess that besides quantity it depends on the usability of your images (nature shots for instance have less downloads than people shots).
This month looks promising, so far I am above my average.
Try to keep uploading on a regular basis so that your images show up frequently in the new images section. (and don't forget there are many users browsing files by date)

Keep posting in forums too. I'm sure readers check out the portfolios of people who make comments a lot. Views mean casual sales.
