I am gobsmacked. Yesterday I read an article about Gorilla tourism in Rwanda and thought to myself how hard it would be to get a stock illustration to go with it.
Today, just for a laugh, I typed in "Rwanda" as a search term. Among other things we have this beautiful picture:
file_thumbview_approve
which is going up on my wall.
Go, iStock. And go, everyone, and give it the votes it deserves!

And there are several others, too.

I just did a search on some "oddities" and got these results:

Stingray = 20 images

Radish = 27

Mongolia = 6

Even searching on abstract concepts gets great returns:

Rebellion = 19

Passion

Fear = 558

Wow!

LOL. If istock has it all, then I may as well quit now with my ideas and shoots!
It has quite a bit, but it hasn't all been done yet

C'mon nan, where's all the mega-loyalty istock contributors are supposed to be infused with. And you with a crown and gold cylinder an' all

By the way - just noticed that the pic I posted has an initial 2 rating, which seems rather strange, though I think it may have been unsharpened. To my way of thinking, an in-focus close-up of a mountain gorilla glaring at you in its natural habitat in Africa is worth a 5. But that's just my view.

Has nothing to do with loyalty, Paul. There's holes to be filled!
Oh, and I see that you're filling them with gorillas

I notice that all the doctor/nurse shots on iStock seem to show them wearing stethoscopes US-style.

UK-trained and many Commonwealth doctors tend to wear them with the ear pieces behind the neck.

So gaps to fill !

I agree, there are still alot of pictures we need. Some of the big agencies have millions of pictures we are just breaking the 200K mark

I think there is still alot of cultural images needed, although mainly us customers, the rest of the world uses this aswell.

African Business, Russian whatever they do, etc etc.

There is loads of holes, we must find them and fill them..

Hey Paul, I agree, an initial 2 is low. I;ve been getting nailed with 2's lately too, it'd be nice if there was an explanation why. Either way, I'm giving it a 5. (even though we both know rating dont matter)

Above the collar, or around the collar (if wearing a coat)?

Still no "kebap" on IStock, and only one file_thumbview_approve
"doner"
... This is a pretty small range when you are in a country called Germany where a "Doner Kebap" is (probably) the #1 fast food. And a typical "German" doner looks even different ...

And the other great part, Fashion's change. Different styles of photography come in and out of ... well, style. And even then, people want options for the same topic.

That's the great thing, there will ALWAYS be opportunity for new creative ideas.

It's been my experience that photos rated '2' are actually quite useful. It seems to mean the content of this photo is so good, it outweighs the technical issues. You won't find many common subjects rated '2' on istock. I think this is even spelled out in some of the intial ratings of '2', where the inspector has commented.

Agreed. Photography is a true realm of infinite possibility.

Paul's original point is well taken, though. A reputation of extreme and ever-expanding image diversity will go far in continuing to develop iStock's market reach.

Designers and Publishers: iStock's got what you need. (Well, at least bookmark and give iStock first crack at fulfilling all of your imagery needs. Your budgets and margins will smile.)
