This is possibly planned for phase 2, but I don't think sorting the files in people's portfolios and search results by average rating and then title is the best method (when sort by rating is checked).

I'd suggest sorting by average rating and then the number of ratings would be better, and reflect the ordering before the intital 3 ratings were removed.

Photographer's portfolios used to show their best pictures first when sorted by rating, now they basically just show them ordered by title (with rated files first).

Just my opinion.

Edit: to change a couple of minor details

Wouldn't it be great if...

...we could each sort the 'Most Popular Files' in the way that best suits the user, like we can the searches, by average rating, by age, by photographer...

I'm really happy that one of my files is at the top of the list, so I'm fine with you leaving it the way it is but there are probably a bunch of files with a five rating which we can't see. I'd love to see all the photo's with a five rating as a search which we can sort.

Perhaps searchable levels?
(5's, 4.75-4.99, 4.50-4.74, etc.)

I'm *really* not a programmer, so this might be entirely unrealistic. But I think it would be cool...

Think that's sorted by age now (for files with 10 or more 5 ratings of course). I'd imagine that could benefit from being sorted by total rating, by adding all the ratings together (or sorted by rating and then number of ratings, which amounts to the same thing).

I'd still like to see a "More" button at the bottom of the list.

I'm not saying its a bad thing - just not really sorted because we see random (well essentially) images with an overall rating of 5. Urbancow's suggestion is a good one. Perhaps even do away with "perfect 5" and go by number of people who've rated it at 5? Would solve the small problem of malicious downrating too...

By showing pics with the most fives we'd have a list of 'Image of the Week' and 'Free Image of the Week.

Problem is, if they are sorted by age, that's the only shake up it will ever have if the sorting is left as is (not that I'm suggesting it will be). Apart from malicious downrating.

Having said that, it seems that the first 20 files in the most popular by rating seem to be sorted by age. Don't know about the last 10.

Maybe sort by newest first, that would keep the list changing a little. Also might be time to increase the min. votes required since there are so many perfect 5's.

I'm just happy to be on it for the time being until someone decides to downrate it. Goodness knows my last one only stayed up for a couple of days before someone went on a spree "correcting" the list.

So you're saying if someone got an image with 14 5/5 ratings it wouldn't push me down?

Well I guess if an older file than yours got rated up so that it had more than 10 reviews, then it could push yours down. Hadn't considered that scenario!

Rather than the newest first, which would mean that old files would never be seen, why not keep it in order of the "last" photo to receive a five. If I rate a photo it'll show up on the list until 30 (or nore if there are multiple ratings on a single file) other photo's are rated a 5.

Disclaimer: I can't claim this idea's original, it's the way the 'site favorites' list works on DPChallenge.com.
(Sidenote: Is it a no-no to mention that site now, does it compete since both sell prints?)

We now need a sort by downloads feature. The most downloaded files are usually the best, however, some just don't get rated but get downloaded a ton.

That would be the other column on the Most Popular page. And the Zeitgeist has a different assortment of stats.

Wouldn't that mean people would get their friends to give 5's to their images to get them on the list?
