FTP is only available to approved video contributors.

The spaces in our folder and file names might be the culprit. Rename them with _ instead of spaces.

"might" be the culprit or "is" the culprit? i am using the ftp for the first time and would like to know how this works so that my time and effort is not futile. what is the expected time frame that videos will be transferred? the site says 24 hours. does this hold true or is it longer?

The FTP server is scanned several times per day searching for folders with the name DONE in them. It ignores folder names that include spaces, and folders that contain more than one video file.

If you upload a folder and it sits untouched for more than 6 hours, the problem is likely to be one of these two issues. If the folder is renamed ERROR then there is a problem with the files inside that folder. If the folder is renamed ERROR there should be a log text file left at the root level of your folder which indicates the error.

If you upload a folder and all things are correct, the folder will disappear within a few hours, and a log file indicating the new file ID will be left. After this point, the video file goes for processing, where it may take 24 hours to show up in your Unfinished Uploads list (which can be seen at the bottom of your iStock upload page). Once it shows up there, you need to click on it to "finish" the upload, attach releases etc.

24 hours is a pretty safe guess, although when the ftp cron dies at 11:pm on Friday night, it will probably not be running again until Monday, in which case your files will sit and wait on the FTP machine. The cron has been pretty stable lately.

By far, the biggest problem that prevents files from moving through the system is incorrect file naming.

Name your folders like this:

good_name_DONE

Name your video files like this:

good_name_HD.mov

Each video file must have its own folder.

Thank you for the correct information!!! My mistake was to actually read and follow the ftp instructions in the PDF - not do the complete opposite as you have suggested to do.

Perhaps if you are connected to the powers that be, you could nudge them to post an accurate set of instructions in the PDF.

In the instructions is clearly states - waste_of_my_time_done not waste_of_my_time_DONE which leads me to believe your instructions are accurate and the "DONE" is case sensitive.

It also clearly states that you can have 6 files in your waste_of_my_time_done folder - not one file.

Also no mention of the underscore.

Anyway, followed your suggestions above and it all works smoothly - Thanks.

ok here we go again. only one file as per your directions per folder. the PDF says to put in releases, thumbs, etc in the same folder. tried that a moment ago and it will only take the one HD file and nothing else otherwise i get an error report.

does this system accpet a ZIP folder with the various files such as the HD, releases, thumbs etc.?

damn confusing when the "instructions" on the "how to" PDF are complete rubbish and not accurate.

Did you add the extensions to the file names for the releases, thumbs, etc?

Do any of your filenames contain the word "thumb", "meta" or "HD" in any other part of the name?

yes for example tree_HD.mov with tree_THUMB.jpg in the same folder got an error. But tree_HD.mov alone went through.

i have wasted_a_lot_of_my_time following the FTP specific instructions provided by istock.

is there a set of instructions that actually work. i should not have to go to the forums to find magic recipes to upload via an FTP site.

Not sure this helps, but I've just uploaded a file that went through fine:

arch_trees_HD.mov (1920x1080 encoded as Photo-JPEG at 97% quality, 260.7MB)
arch_trees_THUMB.jpg (960x540 JPEG image, 165KB)

I wonder if your upload is cutting out partway through the transfer. Does the uploaded filesize match the filesize on your local drive?

I can't manage uploading full size videos saved with Compresssor 4: a message says error! Which is the correct.

Uploaded 40 clips SUCCESSFULLY via FTP late yesterday night. Not one ABC_DONE folder (containing file ABC_HD.mov) has yet been picked up by the system (at least 10 hours have lapsed). Normally such uploaded folders are picked up once every two-three hours, if not earlier.

What does it mean the error message of the ftp client Cyberduck "read timed out" when the upload is finished? Help? I can't manage uploading!

Finished uploading 20+ clips over the past week. Wondering when they will be pulled from the server / screened? This is the first time through the process so I hope I am doing things correctly. Using Dreamweaver as my FTP client.

Have you followed the instruction properly and put them in "_done" folders etc? If not go back and read the instructions again (a pdf that you can download from the bottom of this page: http://www.istockphoto.com/ftp_account_management.php )
