![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Wed Aug 31, 2005 9:48PM | Go back to sleep Dizzo, but can you turn down the snore factor about two notches... it's very distracting |
Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 5:48AM | Scores: 3 - 5 - 3 - 2 - 2 = 15 3 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 = 11 Join me, all, in the prayer of the Steel Cage: "Oh, please let me avoid the overuse of text, particularly ugly or inappropriate fonts... Please give me the strength and creativity to use what is provided me, and not just stick it into a picture frame or cover it completely so I can do whatever I want... Let my artistic and design sensibilities be guided by the desire for artistic accomplishment and not by silly cliches or lame sight gags... And, yea, I beseech thee, oh Cage, to grant me not only the wisdom to know when I'm served with a lemon, but also the understanding of how to turn it into lemonade... Amen." Highpoint: The banana moon-monster, that looked like a page out of the type of children's book I remember fondly. Lowpoint: Everything else. ---------------------------------------- 4 - 9 - 4 - 6 - 5 = 28 9 - 10 - 10 - 8 - 7 = 44 Kcline outclassed Dizzo all the way. Production values were similar, but the concepts were far better (leaving the "former layer moved to a frame of some kind" cop-out in the last blow aside) on the opponent side. Less words describing the scenes would be wonderful. Text isn't bad, but let the whole image tell the tale. Dizzo clearly bit off more than he could chew in this battle. "Yup, he's a goner." ---------------------------------------- 4 - 10 - 8 - 7 - 5 = 34 6 - 9 - 7 - 7 - 8 = 37 From the flawless, if somewhat simple serve, to the bitter end, this one was close. The high point of creativity and pure visual genius was the transition through volleys 3, 4 and 5. Sweet; high marks all round. From there on, things got ... weird. These two seasoned battlers didn't disappoint with either concept or execution, but the link between a nicely evolving common concept, and the actual image was often tenuous. Dizzo lost points on the final round for inappropriate typeface choice, and trotting out the tired old trick of slamming the opponent and putting the battler's names up in lights. We know who the players are here, folks -- no need to tell us. kcline gained style points for taking that weak sauce and flipping it back with some nice tongue-in-cheek conceptual spice, letting the Contender know just where he stands (or lies) in her books. A pleasure, if a somewhat puzzling one. ---------------------------------------- Totals: Contender: 77 / 150 Opponent: 92 / 150 Winner by Split decision is kcline. Award: 5 download credits. Battle Over. Judges for this battle: zerocattle, dspn, peebert. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 1:37PM | High Point: Having fun battling with Dizzo Low Point: Growing cobwebs waiting for the judgement Thanks for the win, though. The critique/slams from the judges might be a lesson learned if it were not like slapping the puppy today for that pee spot he made in the corner (that you already cleaned up) 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. Somehow the fun gets deflated with the length of time that passes between judging (yeah yeah I know we all have busy lives yadda yadda... opponents have lives and we only get a 3 day window to post blows) maybe a solution for the future of the cage, so people don't lose interest due to the lengthy waits, is bring on more judges it seems the BEC, at its current size, is overwhelmed. Dizzo... I had a blast, even if our personal jokes weren't the popular choice, they were fun the way the were supposed to be and funny to who they were supposed to be. Thanks for a great match Judges 2 and 3... thank you for actually giving some identifiable critique. Judge 1... less praying and more judging, it seemed a bit like "general information" and just... meh, lacking in any substance. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 1:58PM | Congrats, Kelly! I knew from round one, that you were going to win this one (nothing personal, Dizzo, but you know I gotta root for the home team). Oh, and Kelly ... now that we both have a little blue mask ... maybe we should use 'em for some ... thing ... |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 2:23PM | It's a blue-faced family thing, eh? Nice job, Dizzo. Better luck next time? I agree about the length of time. Most of the "over-used text" is due to that fact that these are first-gen battles. We were ALL using text at the beginning. Now we have learned from the mistakes of the others. |

Aside from the Rules... since some judges are all about the churchery (yeah I made that word up... so what) aspect of the Steel Cage.. perhaps some sort of 10 Commandments or Steel Cage Bible needs to be written. So we know what the "sins" are before they are commited. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 2:32PM | Oh to Ras... indeed, let's git it awn Just kidding. But, no really... let's. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 2:35PM | Royal blue-masks? Yep. Liked your analogy of the puppy and the long awaited judgement of yesteryear. Congrats on the win Kelly! Dizzo, congrats on opportunity to battle Kell |
![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 5:17PM | And here we are visiting the historic battlefield of Dizzo vs Kcline... Congratulations, Kelly! |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 6:08PM | Judges 2 and 3... thank you for actually giving some identifiable critique. Judge 1... less praying and more judging, it seemed a bit like "general information" and just... meh, lacking in any substance. Sour grapes, baby. If your battle had shown half the creativity and substance of my critique, you would have scored higher. This "everyone uses text" thing is nonsense too- There have been cases where people used text to great effect, and there have been plenty of strong volleys without any text at all. This is an artistic exercise, not a creative writing course, and if you have to rely on text to deliver a message, then you're not working hard enough. If Edvard Munch had been as creatively lethargic, he'd have just painted "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!" instead of creating The Scream. Also, the complete wiping of previous volleys is a sign of lazy play and, not least, grounds for disqualification. It's only by the munificence of the judges that this offense, which is clearly forbidden in the rules, has been overlooked in these early battles. As for the length of the wait, I must apologize, but we've been inundated by the sheer volume of the first wave of battles, and are working to catch up. The response to the reopening of the cage has been overwhelming, and we expect get up to date no later than this week. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Sep 5, 2005 6:20PM | Hardly sour grapes, but... meh it's pretty pointless to try to make a point here. Anyway... thanks for the apology on the wait. **ETA: Oh on a side note.. I was not being sarcastic when I said thank you to Judges 2 and 3, the critiques were valuable and appreciated. So hopefully that was not how it was taken by them. I'll be taking my lack of creativity into Steel Cage retirement now. Thanks for the fun Dizzo! Man disclaimers are fun. The response to the reopening of the cage has been overwhelming, and we expect get up to date no later than this week. I knew this was probably the case. You guys are really doing a great job. You're very thoorough and take just as much time on everybody's battles. Thanks. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Tue Sep 6, 2005 4:44AM | Actually, I also neglected to mention that the cage was still kinda glitchy in the backend, and we had to do a little bughunting and tweaking, which also held things up quite a bit. No worries though. We'll get it all sorted. |
![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Tue Sep 6, 2005 9:46AM | Nice to see the result for this one. Congratulations Kelly (Edited on 2005-09-06 09:47:06 by elis) |
