Outline stroke confusion

I was doing outline strokes. Sometimes I got three paths: one original and two outlines. Other times I got only two: the outlines. I have not figured out what controls the generation of two or three paths.

Any expert gives me a hint?

It may have something to do with whether or not you are outlining an object that has both a fill and a stroke. If the object just has a stroke with a blank fill, you will see two lines in the outline mode. If there is a fill and a stroke you will see three lines in the outline mode. Perhaps this is whats happening.

That's it! I was working in the outline mode so I didn't notice I had a fill.
