Ok, so I'm munching away from one of those big jugs of mixed nuts from Sam's Club that I found in my roommate's part of the pantry (he said he didn't want them, I'm not a crook). Then I see the expire date - three months ago. Gaaaak!

People who know nuts - Is there some odd chemical thingy that happens inside nuts after they get old I need to worry about? I'm usually pickier about stuff I eat, but payday is two days away and it was these or ramen noodles.

For that matter, what have you ever eating (or drank), only to find out after the swallow that it was terribly out of date?

Nuts turn back into testicles after the expiry date.

Don't worry if it's only three months past the date. Those dates are usually sell by dates, even if it was a best if used by date you'er still ok. The problem you can have with nuts is if they go rancid. Even then it won't kill you but rancid nuts taste pretty bad so you probably wouldn't eat very many of them. Was the can still sealed?

I ate beef jerky once, got to the bottom of the bag, and found a lovely green furry piece. I was sick for at least a week. Not sure if that was it, but I felt pretty good untill then.

The only thing that will happen is that the chemical process caused by eating such a big expired portion will drive you nuts! Some parts of the brains will be damaged, other parts won't. But I wouldn't worry too much. What feels better than being nuts?? If it were milk, that would be a different thing..

Btw, try to keep in the neigbourhood of your toilet. A sleepless night or three will accompany you. Oooh, and no more sex, it will only make things worse.. Good luck

They might be old, but they haven't expired yet have they. That could be why they haven't made anyone ill yet.

Two days ago, my wife decided that the garlic salt that we bought 6 years ago was no longer any good. We've packed and moved it twice... but suddenly its no good. I don't think I've used it in the past 6 months or so, so I guess there must be some awesome preservative in there. or something that's gonna kill me next week. Either way, there's probably little I can do about it.

BUT - when I was about ten, my younger brother and I went to the local discount store (Job Lot) in RI with our grandmother. My brother got some candy (gum, I think) that had some sort of contest. Well, it turned out that he'd won a huge prize - about 10k if I remember correctly. Problem was, the contest ended about 3 years earlier... so what was worse? Eating the ancient gum or losing the contest???

Can you die if you eat old nuts?

If old nuts had the power to make it impossible for you to die I'd eat them.

Of course you can die, road traffic accident, heart attack, American politicians with guns...

Squirrels bury nuts in the autumn and dig em up over winter (well some of them anyway) so I think your nuts are probably okay (the back of a cupboard being a better place to store nuts than in damp ground!)

I think you are a bit behind the times with the squirrels - nowadays they have state-of-the-art refrigerated underground storage facilities with 24/7 internet access and computerised wireless nut retrieval.

As Aloysius P. Bushytail IV, president of Internut Corp puts it: "I'll admit we had some PR issues in the past - some bad elements, the whole bird-table, getting in your attic, red-grey thing, but these days you're as likely to find a squirrel in a suit in boardrooms from Zurich to the Urals.

We squirrels have never had the "Give and spend and God may send" mentality, and we're looking at ways of capitalising on that just now, with confidentiality the big issue in storage, we have agents well placed to meet our clients' needs.

The message we want to get across is - We will handle your nuts with
the same care you would"

That is the grossest thing I've ever heard.

Greg,

every hour or so post an update.. we're worried here..

-------------------

Oh, yeah, I'm ok. I didn't even poop funny this morning or nuthin'.

To answer a few things posted in my abstenance...

1) The nuts were sealed. It's one of those plastic jugs with a screw-on lid. There were no fuzzy things in the jug (I looked ahead of time).

2) They didn't taste funny. One or two of them smelled weird, but I didn't eat those since I didn't know what kind of nuts they were anyway being a mixed nut jug. I only put nuts in my mouth if I know what they really are.

3) There was one random "Cheese-it" in the jug, but I'm pretty sure that just got there via my roommate who must have been eating Cheese-its and Velveta one night and dropped one in the nut jug. I ate the Cheese-it and it was still crunchy.

4) My dogs circled the container so they must have been safe. Knowing that some nuts are poison to dogs, I don't give them any from this jug since there may be mixed nut residue on some of them, but they get a peanut from a Planters jar. Those are in date. The dogs eat better nuts than I do.

So, I'm still alive. More nuts for me.
