It's never been done. It's high bloody time, but at last it's on the horizon - South Africa's first

iKapaLypse 1 - 5 February 2012!

While this idea was starting to germinate, local members evilclown and echodelta predicted over an exploratory lunch that there would be huge support for our first event. Not only from Seffricans, but also from some of our more illustrious overseas members. And they should know - Shaun and Elissa are two of the most experienced Lypsers on the block.

Even so I checked on their claims - by contacting Istock admins ivar, Casarsa and epicurean. Would they be keen in joining us as class captains for a four-day event in sunny Cape Town, summer, blue skies, white beaches, bronzed girls ...?

Splutter splutter in their beers they went, and said "Hell, YES!"

Still, just to be sure, I chatted to another local admin, the irrepressible subman, Lyspe leader of note. Of course, he says, he'll be there, and proceeded to rattle off names that made me think of black diamonds and other bling. Apparently some who shall remain nameless for now have already indicated to him that they desperately need an excuse to blow their bleak northern hemisphere joints in Feb.

Now let me think about this - can we pull it off?

Echodelta is Istock's chief lypse event organiser. Subman and evilclown regularly run official Lypse events. With this kind of official backup, available right here on our doorstep, we're not gonna screw around. We're going big.

Soooo, who's up for a four-day event over a weekend, provisionally at the beginning of February 2012?

The program and cost are pending detailed discussions with the various roleplayers, potential sponsors and venue owners, but so far we're looking at the following events:

* beach lifestyle shoot on the West Coast
* organic farming, restaurant life and wine-industry shoot at one venue winelands
* dedicated Vetta shoot, hopefully under leadership of Casarsa
* live demo inspection by an Istock inspector of some of your files shot on location
* glitzy fashion/aspirational styled shoot at swish beach house location
* possibly a township tour for editorial shoots

We aim to have a small bus cart us and all equipment around from our hotel to the location, and aim to spend most of the day in one location to maximise shooting time and extend the learning experience. We'll try locate everyone in the same place, close to the beach, away from traffic, for quick escapes, and each evening we're planning a debriefing session, image downloading and a wee dram each while we talk shop, network and raise the ceiling on our collective experience.

iKapaLypse 2012 will only be open to Exclusive members, first come first serve, and we will probably limit the numbers to 20 attendees split into two or three groups per day for max shooting opportunity. Istock usually supplies limited financial help and some swag in the form of T-shirts.

What's next? Well, let me know if you're interested in attending in February. Your name goes on a list. As soon as we've had a proper discussion about locations, creative ideas and formats, we'll nail down the price. Let's first get the numbers.

At $=ZAR7, sure you can afford it! In fact, you're probably wealthy enough to extend your trip, take in some Big Five game viewing and tripping out of Cape Town, and still have change left.


I can provide some suggested tour itineraries to those interested in taking a week or two extra to stock up on some tanning. Feb is our hottest month, but most of the locals will have gone back to work, so the beach will be all yours.


By the way, there are no malaria mosquitos, lions don't walk the streets, we have fast internet, running, hot water, five star hotels, paved streets and even electricity where we'll be shooting. Sorry to be boring. (-: You are also safe going out at night, driving around and sightseeing. Unless of course you visit dubious slums at the dead of night.

I'm interested.

Thanks to all for sitemailing me. I am drawing up two lists - those who are definitely in, and those who are interested. The latter go into the "provisional" list until you indicate otherwise. Those who are "definitely interested" also go into the provisional list for now, as above.


In the mean time, I am waiting for our brainstorming session with the creative committee to confirm the actual dates. This session will only take place once subman and the others have returned from the London Lypse and can think straight again.


In the interest of attendee travel organisation though, let's put the dates of February 2-5 2012 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) as provisional for the event. This may change, depending on venue availability etc.


Also factor in the evening of Feb 1, the Wednesday night before the event, for registration, release forms signing and a traditional South African braai to welcome everyone to Cape Town. A braai is a cultural event in which men stand around an open fire, poking at raw meat with a can of beer in the hand. Mm, that doesn't sound so South African any more ...

A great list so far, thanks for all for responding promptly with your sitemails of confirmation! The spread so far is impressive - 3 diamond contributors, a smattering of gold and silver. Which means only one thing - a wealth of experience that can help us lesser mortals shatter our own creative ceilings.


I'm currently putting a proposal together to our local tourism minister, and I'm hoping to pitch for logistical support - transport and locations fees sponsored. I have met and interviewed this minister for TV before, and I'm confident that I will get a meeting with him through a tourism intermediary I often work with. We have a meeting this morning to discuss.


What does that mean, if successful? That the cost of our shoots will radically come down, that transport will be sorted, that we start thinking blue sky for producing great content.
