this looks fun. I just may take the whole family for a month or something. I can't believe tickets are only $750 RT from Dallas right now smile

Lucky you... I am looking at almost double that ...

Yeah, I'm thankful American Airlines is based in Dallas. Every other airline is twice as much from here too.

I've been asked about getting an opportunity to shoot some big cats while you're here. Here's some pointers:

You have quite a few options right on our doorstep. About half an hour away, just up the road from us, there is Buffelsfontein where you can photograph lions and other game. It is small, and not quite the iconic African bush you'll find at Pilansberg or the Kruger park or the Kalahari. But it is close.

On the same road is a fascinating place called !Kwa ttu where they train young San (Bushmen) from the Kalahari, Botswana and Namibia the almost lost art fieldcraft, tracking animal spoor, hunting etc. and then send them out to be field guides. I wrote an article on this setup a while ago, and it is worth spending a morning going on a hike with the bushmen through their safari area, for game watching and learning how they make fire from nothing, how they make poison-tip arrows, store water in ostrich shells etc.

Then further north from CT, around 1.5 hrs, is Fairy Glen, which belongs to someone I know. They are very good, and claim to be the only place where you find free-roaming, hunting (not fed) lion in Cape Town.

A must-do also is to visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island, which is a few kilometers out to sea directly in front of where we are based. I woud keep that on an itinerary for before or after the event, as is a visit to Cape Point and a ride up Table Mountain. They are the usual tourist things, but spectacular, wild and in a completely natural state.

OK, things have been rolling along merrily. I have negotiated a 15% discount at the Sir David for Istockers, but since the place only has 10 rooms, of which 3 rooms can be converted into doubles if some of you want to share to save costs, they have arranged to take the overflow to a next door establishment, Blouberg Manor, and serve breakfast for the Manor people at the Sir David. The Manor is 5 minutes' walk away. Book your room or shared room with Claire Dinnie, the GM, at office@thesirdavid.co.za, and mention that you are part of the Istock group.

The Sir David will also serve dinners, and breakfast is included. It has its own bar and roomy lounge and dining room, so should be perfect as HQ and debriefings. Price per room per night is ZAR714, which at current rate is $106. If you need more budget accommodation, please sitemail me and I'll see what else is available in the immediate vicinity. Also within 2 minutes walk is the Blue Peter Hotel, famous for its sundowners on the lawn. Prices are about the same as the Sir David. Claire is currently speaking to the Blue Peter GM to see what they can offer us in terms of accommodating the overflow.

At this stage, you probably won't need rental cars yet as I am trying to get a large enough bus. Most rental companies have outlets nearby and will be happy to bring vehicles out to you.

/Sounds awesome!

I would be happy to share a room at the Sir David with another female. Sitemail me if you are keen and I will make the booking.

ETA: What dates exactly should we book for? Wed, Thurs, Friday and Sat night or should we include Sunday night as well?

Monique, being in Cape Town I doubt if you have to book a room. Driving through from your place should not be an issue.

Regarding the bookings, I can't be more specific at the moment, sorry. It will depend on our creative meeting after the London Lypse - at this meeting we'll decide on the various creative concepts, venues required, and leading from that, the number of days. My guess would be might as well use Sunday as a full day, as most folks are probably staying longer and will want a hot shower after the final day. Hence I would also book for Sunday night.

If we take that as a given, the only variable then would be when to start - Thursday night or Wednesday night. That we'll determined based on the meeting above.

Thanx for the info, so we only have to book when we know exact dates.

Driving from where I live wouldn't be to far but if we do early mornings or late nights I would prefer not to drive at all and I think it will be nice staying where everyone else is. I'll make the call when the dates and itinerary have been finalised!
