Useful Photography & Lighting Sites

We've collated a whole bunch of useful links in this thread that are useful photographers.

Please feel free to add suggestions to add to this sticky below.

Useful lighting tips & links (many originally posted by emyerson & gewitterkind):

Strobist
http://strobist.blogspot.com/
This blog shows you how to get a professional lighting setup without spending too much money. There are also many 'on assignment' posts, showing an image and explaining how it was done. The site has an attached flickr group with an active discussion board.

Studiolighting.net
http://www.studiolighting.net/
The first stop on the web for anyone who wants to learn studio lighting. One of the site operators (and podcasters for their affiliated studio lighting podcast) is our very own Ed Hidden. This site is a must.

I keep going back to this tutorial. It's so straightforward and simple, and it just makes sense.

Useful Photography Sites

Here are some links to useful photography sites. Things may change over time so if you spot a dead link or defunct site, please let me know and I'll amend or delete it. I'm starting this just based on my bookmarked favourites, so if you don't see your favourite site, please let me know and I'll add that too. I'm not adding links to stores, as I reckon most people can easily Google B&H, Adorama or Wex etc

Firstly though, this site is a kind of mega-directory of all photo related sites and is very useful:

http://www.photostartsheet.com/

General sites

http://petapixel.com/
A great blog that's updated several times a day with some really great photo articles and links.

http://www.bjp-online.com/
The British Journal of Photograhy is the world's longest running photography magazine. Lots of cool articles and gear reviews as well as features on some great photographers.

http://www.pdnonline.com/index.shtml
Photo District News is another cool magazine with lots of interesting articles on-line.

http://www.photography-about.com/
Daily tips and tricks to help improve your photography.

Review sites

http://www.dpreview.com/
Probably the most comprehensive camera review site there is. Also reviews lenses and the home page blog links to all kinds of other photography articles and blogs. They also have this very handy tool for comparing camera features and functions.

http://www.lensrentals.com/blog
Not strictly a review site as they're not full reviews and the site has much more than reviews to offer too, but it's well written and the test data is very well presented. Roger Cicala posts a lot of interesting articles on the more technical side of photography, definitely worth a read.

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/
A great place to read reviews of lenses by people who actually own them. As with any user reviews there is a bit of bias that you have to be aware of, most people don't want to admit to spending a fortune on a piece of under-performing rubbish, but they can also point out pros and cons that some professional reviews gloss over.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/
A great site for detailed lens reviews and especially for Canon users. Has a very handy tool for comparing 100% crops from various bodies and lenses. It also has reviews of Nikon lenses and 3rd party lens manufacturers too.

http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/overview
Another good site for lens reviews, especially comprehensive for Canon and Nikon users. It also has some reviews of Sony, Pentax and Olympus lenses. Has quite a large database of tests now.

http://www.photodo.com/category_2.html
Lens reviews for mostly Canon & Nikon. Not particularly detailed but can be interesting.

http://www.eflens.com/
A very handy site that lists all the places to see on-line reviews of Canon EF lenses.

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007
CF and SD card reviews - see which ones work best with your camera.

Rumours and new gear sites

http://photorumors.com/
As the url suggests, this site concentrates on rumours of upcoming and new photo gear from all manufacturers.

http://www.canonrumors.com/
Concentrates on rumours and leaks regarding Canon gear and gear that accepts Canon fit lenses.

http://www.photographybay.com/
A daily blog that links to rumours and leaks and also deal alerts, reviews and articles.

Miscellaneous

http://www.retronaut.com/
Amazing photos from the past and some really freaky things to make health & safety officers faint.

http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php
This page is a fantastic way to instantly assess the brightness calibration and performance of your monitor.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
A comprehensive monitor calibration and test site.

http://regex.info/exif.cgi
Jeffrey's Exif Viewer allows you to paste in a photo's url and read the EXIF data, also available as a plug in for Firefox and Chrome. Very handy when trying to see how a photographer may have achieved a certain affect or spot where a contributor may have gone wrong in a critique request.

I've updated the Photography site section

Please feel free to add suggestions below of any other great or useful sites.

The next section I'm going to update is the tutorial section which was getting a bit dated. If you have any links to cool tutorials, any amazing techniques then please share them here and the best ones will be added to the sticky.

Don't mean to toot my own horn, but I'm new to iStock and figured I'd give it try. So here's my suggestion for helpful websites, as this is my number one viewed blog article with over 143,000 unique views, "Editing Photos vs. Photo Editing, Know the Difference." http://www.lensdiaries.com/photo-tips/editing-photos-photo-edit/

Just my two centavos worth and I hope you enjoy it along with almost one hundred free articles on LensDiaries.com. Thanks, Rolando Gomez, photographer and author of five photography books.
