![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:14PM | This summer, member nuno and I are planning on hosting a Photo/Illustration meetup in Toronto, Canada. We're excited to bring the two mediums together for the first time at a Minilypse! Click here to check out our event website CLICK HERE to see our event lightbox!!! When?: May 18th - May 21st, 2012 (Victoria Day/May Long Weekend) Where?: Toronto, Ontario, Canada. What? Here is our schedule during the event: FRIDAY MAY 18th Registration and Orientation Location: University of Toronto Hart House Music Room After registration we'll be presenting two lectures, one geared to photographers and the other to illustrators: • Photographers: Preparing and planning your shoots • Illustrators: Drawing demonstrations from your vector Admins SATURDAY MAY 19th Subway Station Shoot(Photo/Illustration) Location: Toronto Lower Bay • Toronto has an out of commission subway station available for filming/shooting • We'll have our own 4-car subway and the entire platform • 4 shoot locations available: 2 commercial (Agency style), 2 artistic (Vetta style) • Concepts include accessibility issues (disabilities), urban transport and lifestyle Please note that any copyrighted materials and transit logos you might encounter while at the platform can't be uploaded as RF stock, though it may be eligible for Editorial. Photographers The photographers will be shooting all day at TTC's Lower Bay subway platform. We'll have many disability-related props including a wheelchair, walker, and canes. We'll have a Vetta-driven shoot station with creative props as well. We're also bring a guitar case if anyone would like to shoot a busking scene at the station. We encourage you to bring along your own props, however, our agreement with the location is that no violence- related themes will be shot. So please avoid props like guns or other weapons when you're brainstorming shooting ideas. Illustrators Since space will be tight, there won't be room for all the illustrators to be at the subway all day, so we'll break into groups and rotate through the station. The rest of us will set up nearby for sketching and socializing. We may also have the chance to model as extras during the shooting. Illustrators will be able to take reference photos in the station. Please be respectful to the photographers: Don't wander into their shooting setups, distract models, or use flash photography that could be distracting. Keep in mind these images can be for more than just illustration reference images. With all the support you'll be getting from the photo team, this could be an opportunity to try uploading some photos to your iStock portfolio, too. In the afternoon we've arranged a visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario. In addition the AGO's permanent collections, we will also get to check out the exhibit 'Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris', a selection of artworks from Picasso's own personal collection. SUNDAY MAY 20th School Bus / Classroom Shoot (Photo/Illustration) Location: Sunnybrook School • Our location is a modern elementary school with a recently built outdoor play area • We'll have access to two classrooms • We'll also be providing a yellow school bus • We'll continue to explore the themes of accessibility and disabilities, as well as general classroom themes • Illustrators are welcome at the location all day for reference shooting Everyone will spend the day at a school-themed shoot at Sunnybrook School. Like the subway shoot, the photographers will have shooting stations while the illustrators are free to roam and explore while shooting on their own. We have 4 shooting locations: Two classrooms, an outdoor play area and a yellow schoolbus. We'll also have a child sized wheelchair to use as a prop. Please note that as per our agreement with Sunnybrook school, all photographers will need to provide them with copies of their photos for them to use for their promotional material. One of our illustrators, Diane555, has graciously offered to provide pieces of abstract art and collages, in case anyone would like to set up a gallery shoot on location. She's also created some original board games and card games, which we can use as props without having to worry about copyright. A property release will be distributed for all of her work, but please be sure to ask if you're unsure which pieces are released or not. MONDAY MAY 21st Workshops and Post-Processing (Photographers) Location: S1Group Studios • Photographers can spend the day working on their photos • We'll work together to demonstrate effective post-processing techniques to help everyone get the most out of their images Reference Shootapalooza (Illustrators) Location: S1Group Studios • Build up your reference library in a professional studio environment • Learn to work with models and props • Get guidance from some of iStock's top photographers • Don't worry if you don't have a dSLR camera, just bring a CF card (we will have extra cameras available) Ticket Prices Photographers: $550 CDN Illustrators: $100 CDN We've sitemailed all attendees with details on where to send your PayPal payments. If you didn't receive the sitemail please contact me. The deadline for ticket payments is April 30th, 2012. Who's Coming? We've had a lot of interest in this event (yay)! We've decided on our attendee numbers: we have space for 15 illustrators and 18 photographers. We've listed attendees below in the order they expressed interest. We've also started an 'overflow' list. If anyone decides they can't come, the next person on the wait list will be added as an attendee. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:01PM | I'm in no matter where it is! There are pros for me for each location, Toronto is closer and cheaper, but I have friends in the Calgary area I'm dying to visit... so either work for me! GeorgePeters - you should still come if it's in Calgary! It would be fun to see you again!! (Edited on 2012-01-20 13:02:37 by Andrea_Hill) |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:09PM | I would reeeeally love to come and see you guys again! Because of the distance I can't guarantee we are 100% attending, but I am now really motivated to make it to Toronto/Calgary |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:37PM | As much as I'd love to visit Calgary, I can't promise that I'd be able to make the journey. There's a 100% chance I'll be able to make it to a Toronto lypse, so that gets my vote. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 3:28PM | oh Toronto gets my vote too!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:26PM | PARTY TIME!! I vote Toronto as well. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Sat Jan 21, 2012 2:58PM | Haha, OK looks like I'm heading back to Toronto this summer! Yay! It's been far too long I'll update my OP. Now the question is, what dates work for everyone? And, how involved would we like to be? Should this be more of a social meetup, or would you like to have a full-on tutorial/tips/demos/reference gathering type of event with planned sit-downs? Also, how long should we make this (1 day, 1 week)? I find anything more than a full day of sitting in a stuffy space staring at glowing monitors is brutal. Maybe we can mix in some sightseeing/fun stuff with hands-on computer time? And, should we keep this vector focused or open up to more traditional illustration mediums? |
![]() ![]() Posted Sat Jan 21, 2012 4:34PM | What about Photography Geeks like me that may be interested in learning more about illustration? I'm about 3 hours from Toronto. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:13PM | The most productive time for me at the Milan Vectorlypse, believe it or not, was the time spent sightseeing and hanging at cafe's & restaurants with fellow vectorians. I got my best illustration reference during those great moments. Extended periods sitting listening to tutorials etc, puts me into a coma. My vote is 4 days, it needs to be at least that long to justify the travel expenses. The longer I'm there, the more opportunity I have to get money making Illustration reference. I'll probably stay a little longer and do some day trips. September, after school starts is probably the best time for me. We are planning a late October Cancun trip so I hope there is no conflict there. Warmer weather destinations always trump northern destinations in my world. Just my 2 cents. I am very flexible. Hope that info helps. (Edited on 2012-01-22 13:31:32 by GeorgePeters) |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:16PM | Oh yeah, forgot to mention...I have 28 illos from the Milan Vector Lypse accepted already with more in the queue and more to come. It was a very productive 11 days for me. A fantastic experience! |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Mon Jan 23, 2012 2:48PM | I agree, my favorite Lypse moments are always the downtimes, when you get to know everyone and relax and nerd out over vectors! I'm also OK with making this a longer event, there's always tons of fun stuff to do in Toronto. @Daxus, you're definitely welcome to come out! Maybe we should have 'social' tickets for non-illustrators |
