How about that R3:1, great work Ice!
Hammer - The final blow is a strong finish, love the rich, dark nature of it.

7 - 9 - 9 - 7 - 9 = 41
7 - 8 - 6 - 6 - 7 = 34
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME...
What a way to revive the cage with a super sexy battle to the death.
ICE solid effort right the way through caging at its best, round 4 although the colours were amazing it felt a little 2d and composition just didn't quite make it the striking image it could have been.
HHFX really high level of skills on display, I just felt you jumped around a bit between styles which I feel you made it hard for yourself, probably due to time restraints but some rounds weren't as solid as others... a real highlight for me was R2 great work.
Both of you should be very proud of this battle it was nice being a spectator.
6 - 6 - 10 - 7 - 9 = 38
5 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 7 = 33
R1V1: Nice work - quite a full on blow. THe foreground image is not as sharp as the knight behind which is a little strange. Also to give more impact to your foreground imagery I would darken/fade back the background elements which will also give your piece more of a sense of depth.
R1V2: This one's very oversaturated, so much so we're losing a lot fo detail in the shadows. The mask is nicely create out of the existing helmet, but looks composited onto the face, it hasn't cast enough shadow ove the face, and is tonally much more contrasty.
R2V1: I like the coloring of this, and it looks like you've mapped a skull onto the woman's face which is a nice touch - but overall it feels a bit photoshop filter heavy, rather than concept heavy.
R2V2: Hello! Here's some cage surrealism utilizing the skull from the previous blow - this has stripped away all that darkeness and given us a real dreamlike quality to the image - loving this shiznit! The lamp light could do with a bit more work, but overall - two thumbs up.
R3V1: Wha? huh!? Who's that now… This battle has just stepped up 5 notches. Rain, water, waves spray, these are difficult to do well, and these are well done - beautiful coloring and composition too - speechless…
R3V2: You've got awaked girl in there so that's going to earn you points straight off the bat. The work on the liquid doesn't quite look fluid/wet in the transparent areas, nice complementary coloring.
R4V1: Nice reversal of the previous blow (fire and water) good PS technique with the flames - that is one massive matchstick though!
R4V2: The compositing on this blow isn't as good as previously, the cigarette looks like it's behind her face rather than in her mouth. The airbrushed highlight on the cigarette is a little rough as well - and the blue dusk/twilight back ground looks a little too much like a simple blue overlay, rather than natural dusk lighting, but again nice use of complementary colors.
R5V1: nice work with the rain effect gain, water droplets are a nice touch too, great hues, nice tones, very sombre lighting - I get a apprehensive "something big is about to happen" feeling from this - nice atmosphere.
R5V2: nice work with the window frame, it's just a little too sharp in isolation, and lacking some shadowing and form. Droplets on the pane look great, and the red/blue siren lights are nice, they'd probably also be falling on the guys face though. Compared to the window, that guys is rather over saturated and contrasty, I would have preferred to see that toned back a bit - nice work though.
THis battle showed some absolute flashes of absolute brilliance from both of you - would love to see you back in the cage for another round - especially if there's going to be more of where this came from.
6 - 6 - 9 - 8 - 9 = 38
5 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 9 = 35
R1V1: a somewhat confusing message - I can't tell at whom the swords are directed plus one person has chainmail and the other two don't. A little too much going on and foreground a bit dark (and covered up). Quality is mostly there, a little fuzzy on the isolations.
R1V2: it feels like a lot of darkness has been applied to hide issues which make it difficult to see everything going on - I just am now seeing the woman in the background. The skull mask (?) feels like a sticker which, as the main focus, could have had a bit more care applied.
R2V1: I like this layering effect but the glowing lines feel a bit too much like simple PS effects.
R2V2: Now we're getting somewhere. Really interesting scene. Isolations at the top of the arches are a little rough (I think this could be fixed by dodge/burn tool) but everything else is great. The girls and the lamp feel a little out of place. I'm not totally sure on the girls, but maybe it's just a matter of their clothing. I keep trying to put the lamp up on a sidewalk or beachfront because it feels like it's floating. Maybe this would be fixed by pulling the water back a bit so you can see more surface area?
R3V1: Your BOB for me. The colors and texture are totally amazing. This would be a 10 from me if the isolation around the arches wasn't so harsh.
R3V2: I like the concept a lot but I sense you've run short on time. I'd like to see a bit more of the blue light on the girl, right now she's really orange, and a bit brighter around the bottle and the splashes - a bit more light coming from the bottle.
R4V1: HOT, well done keeping in place. The colors are a little harsh for me to easily make out the swinging girl. I think a lot of detail was put into this area but the lower flames compete a bit.
R4V2: pretty nice job on lighting, I don't feel the cigarette is effectively in her mouth/lips. Again in the background, there are a few things going on that have been darkened to the extent of missing them.
R5V1: excellent rebound. My only complaint here is that I am not 100% that you mean for the raindrops to be on their bodies or if the raindrops are on a window. I think this is due to the woman's cheek that has more stripes than drops and that the man's glasses have no drops. Absolutely love the light glowing in the bg.
R5V2: Your BOB for me. Love the harsh lighting, colors, style all of it. It actually feels like it tells a complete story which was a bit lacking in a few other rounds.
While I think Ice had the upperhand with his more simple but clearer concepts throughout, Hammer stood strongly. So glad to see you guys in here, it was a joy to view!

seriously? no one here after three hours of judgment?!?! Congrats Ice! well done! I have to say, I'm not a very good critiquer - knowing all the right language, etc. - but I'm learning too!
hahaha, I don't get to edit my comments! As soon as I hit submit, I realized I'd missed one element that weighed in for me: keeping items/an item in place.
I think you both had a great deal of fun and I truly enjoyed watching. Look forward to you both back in here with another opponent!

Congrats Ice!! this was a great battle and I think the BEC hit it right on the head!!! I had a great time, and look forward to maybe doing this again some day Ice......
like the judges said some of the blows were dark........I have noticed that when I save my PSD files to JPEG they get really dark.....as in like 1 or 2 stops lower than originals.....This has just started happening about 3 months ago.......I know compression can account for some of it but as you can see here it is really dark.........

Posted Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:23PM
hmmm thats very weird HHFX... what colour space are you using to create you designs?
Posted Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:36PM
HHFX... Here is a little trick to make sure everything is set the same when comes to colors in CS... Set the colors in the BRIDGE!
That will set the colors for the entire suite consitently. Hope that helps...
