Canon needs to respond with something, especially after replacing the 1Ds with a camera that has lower resolution than its predecessor.

This pre-ordering thing has to stop.  Are you guys crazy?  You should all cancel your pre-orders right now.  It is not prudent to order something before I have full tested it, used it for iSP uploads and reported on the results sometime later this year.

I agree. Canon should announce it(5Dmk3) before Nikon starts shipping D800 in March.
The very same reason I moved to Canon system was Nikon's lack of XXXL capable camera other than the D3X which it was no brainer for me as I saw no $5000 worth of difference.
I had D700 which I sold to buy Canon 5Dmk2. Ergonomics, autofocus, and body quality of D700 were greatly missed but 21mp was what I was after. Now D800 is here, and I can't wait to try it out.
Is there anybody in the same shoe? ... holds both Canon and Nikon lens?

Well following the rumors it looks like Canon will announce somethiong that will steal the attention away from the new Nikon. I don't think Canon is in any particular rush. It will not be cheap however.

With 36MP+, I don't think I'd ever bother turning the camera round to shoot vertical, I'd just crop it from the horizontal in LR and still have a massive image.

You need squared formst then. Crop from your preferred axis or leave as is. I think hasselblad is just right for you.

I almost went over to Canon or Sony for the larger size.  I have about $7k of Nikon lenses, by the time I sold them and replaced them with canon or sony ones I would have lost almost the different between the d3x and a 5d mkII.  I got the D3x about 14 months ago now and it has greatly helped my productivity (and income), I have also been given a good trade in value for it too on a d800, but I may wait for a d4x

Nikon has very good lens. I still prefer them to Canon, because I think they have less CA problems. In any case if you invested in Nikon lens it would make no sense to switch to Canon, unless you need 1080p video from your DSLR.

Nikon has for a long time offered a degree of control over its Auto ISO settings, allowing the user to specify a minimum shutter speed that the camera should aim to maintain by raising the ISO. However shooters using zoom lenses, or worried about camera shake rather than freezing the action, may prefer a minimum shutter speed that relates to the focal length in use, rather than specifying an absolute figure. This has been resolved on the D800 and the D4 with an Auto ISO system that detects the lens' focal length.

Finally!

This morning, I received an email from Amazon where I pre-ordered the D800.

It says,

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on February 06, 2012 (Order# 103-35xx-xxxxxxx):

"Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)"
   Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 - January 08, 2013

Nikonrumors.com says it is an error on their system... But I'm concerned that this might be true. Nikon may have gotten high volume orders.

Interesting D800/D800E guide by Nikon. They show examples of diffraction limiting resolution beyond f/8 as well as a moire example with the D800E and how their tool reduces the effect.

I like this.  Set the aperture, set min speed and the camera also adjusts the ISO when speed is at low end.  Let's see if Canon does this too with their new cameras.

Diffraction is also mentioned as a possible way of "combating" colour artifacts and moire. Interesting read, as you say, thanks for posting.

I pre-ordered the D800, I've been waiting for the sucessor to the d700 for awhile now. I'm glad it's here, i'm kinda bummed about the high pixel count but excited about the ability to shoot hd and extend my expertise.

Very nice cameras.  As a D300S user, I have been waiting for the replacement for the D700 to come out before deciding to go to the FX format.  Wasn't expecting such a game changer.  Be interesting to see how these stack up against the 16.2 MP D4.  Also be interesting to see what the price will be when it hits New Zealand shores.

I've been waiting for a Nikon  that shoots top quality video and has higher mp than my D300 with all the features and more and at a reasonable price.  Yes, I'm on the preorder list.

Have you noticed flash card price increase recently?
They've gone up quite a bit compared to last quater.
I bought 32GB CF for $79 a few months ago, they run $125 now...
There might be increase in buyers of high capacity cards getting ready for D800...
