beatronix, really appreciate your comments. I totally read you. It was very rushed on my end. Thankfully my clients don't know I'm in here ;D |
Posted Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:47PM | Wow, the style is so different, but at least they have more options to choose from.. |
Posted Sun Apr 15, 2012 2:46PM | all right! final blow, going along with a more realistic style. That was fun! thanks a lot for playing, Kelly!

Posted Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:35PM | Awesome work guys... now its judgment time |
Posted Wed Apr 18, 2012 12:25PM | I liked a lot this last one! Can't wait to see the judgement. Let us know what you'll use in the end! |
Posted Sat May 5, 2012 6:12PM | Just wondering if this one is going to be judged? Not to sound like a jerk but I feel this is one of the reasons that the cage loses it steam at times. i know everyone has there own schedules that they have to take care of......but this this battle has been in judgement for 20 days, almost a month. |
Posted Thu May 10, 2012 2:36AM | Ive been away for a while, so I missed the last ones, but I really like them, esspecially with the flower coming out of the window. I hope for you that it's going to be judged soon! |
Posted Mon May 14, 2012 9:37PM | hi everyone! I have these on the printer. Yes a little late but I've been out of town at lypse for two weeks, it's an "alternative" school, no worries! I'm printing enough of each that they can pick and choose.
These were great to work with, just a few minor edits to add appropriate text.
Favorite of the students was Kelly's first round:
Favorite for something "fancier" to send to Grandma & Grandpa was a combination of rounds with the flower:
And, although not picked as a favorite, I think when they see it printed, they won't be able to help but like this one (printing smaller quantity):
thanks everyone - especially Kelly!!! - for your input and participation! Sorry the kids were not present, they were super busy with their senior projects (party last Friday night for that) and they didn't really understand the SC format until my boy explained one day a couple weeks ago. |
         Posted Tue May 15, 2012 7:03AM | Very nice final designs |
Posted Tue May 15, 2012 11:40PM | Scores:
7 - 5 - 7 - 6 - 6 = 31
5 - 6 - 5 - 8 - 6 = 30
You really set yourselves a challenge with this one. And by the looks of it, it was quite hard to come up with continuous designs on the same theme.
On the whole I found a lot of the initial designs too literal, and the vector work, rather kitsch 80s early 90s in style, was this intentional?
But as you both continued with the theme, the designs started to communicate a lot more with PCC's Round 3 and Hammer's Round 4 being the strongest of the battle.
In terms of being an inspirational, motivational piece of art for a graduating class I'd have to go with Hammer's round 4, it's muted color and hinting at history, growth and the future, does it for me. That said though PCC has been more consistent through out the battle.
----------------------------------------
6 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 8 = 35
10 - 6 - 6 - 8 - 9 = 39
What a cool battle! I really like the idea of how this one started. I bet this was harder than expected to come up with a design keeping with the theme and idea that it may be used as an invite. Kudos to you both. A wide variety of style across the battle - from grunge to vector. They are all quite creative but R1:V1, R3:V2 and R5:V1 are my favorites.
----------------------------------------
10 - 8 - 8 - 6 - 9 = 41
8 - 8 - 6 - 8 - 9 = 39
Wow!!! Great images you two! Love the illustration meets photography - this is what I'd love to see more of in the cage! I have to say I really enjoyed all of the images in all of the rounds.
My favorite from hammerheadfx was his clever R2V1 and also his R5V1 because I really liked the concept and the 3D effect of the flower coming out of the frame. Nice!
My favorites of pink_cotton_candy were R1V2 because I loved the grunge effect of the students stencil, and really liked the way you made it look natural, plus I enjoyed the way it was cleverly composed with the floral decal coming from behind the garbage can (I'm a sucker for detail like that). I also really enjoyed R5V2 - It made me believe there was a guy painting 2012 with clouds... very clever.
Great work you two, I really hope to see more like this from you both.

Posted Tue May 15, 2012 11:53PM | Sorry this one took so long guys....
I had judged this one but got beaten to the punch.
Id just like to ad the comment that I felt the battle was a little disjointed. Probably due to the fact it started in portrait and halfway through switched to landscape... I also think the battle slowly went off theme, I was so excited about the theme then seeing round 1 I knew it was game on. But unfortunately the battle drifted away from there, I would have loved to see the whole Shepard Fairey thing evolve.
Saying that, you guys did come up with some pretty cool stuff that you should be proud of.

Posted Thu May 17, 2012 1:49AM | Pink I really love the final designs!! The font you chose for the second image really sets it off!!! This battle was a lot of fun and I am glad the kids got the ability to choose what they liked from all these designs. I may have won this battle, but Pink, you have one the "Kick Ass Cool Parent Award" for bringing this to the cage!!! That was a great idea!!! |

Posted Thu May 24, 2012 7:36PM | thanks all! the kids loved them all! I love being the crazy-do-something-different-than-everyone-else parent! sorry for delay responding, I've been out of town at lypse + extended travel, home for just a few days to catch up on client work, then back out for a week for family vacation.
I really appreciate the comments, trust me, I know it was a bit disjointed. It was really hard to combine all the elements requested plus, with the delay, it ended up getting so close to the time I was leaving plus helping child with Senior project, etc. All in all, a little rushed on my part and I know it shows.
fwiw, my fav from a learning bit was R1V2 - the "spraypainting" was really fun and I used photos that I took when I went on Kelby's Photowalk with my boy; and even though it didn't fit the "theme" I LOVED Kelly's R5V1 with the trillium flower coming out of the frame.
thanks again for playing, Kelly, really appreciated your interest in the theme! |
