How to find a reputable web design firm?

I'm looking to hire a vendor for a large scale web design project, but I've never had to do this before. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look, or how to find a reputable vendor? I'm looking specifically for the Boston-Metro area, but general tips would be helpful as well. My first inclination was to search on Yelp, but it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped.

are you looking for designers? or programmers - sometimes they are one and the same but you might only need one or the other.
front end and usability = designer
back end and coding = programmer

to be honest if youre looking for companies in your area - do a google search. there will be a bunch of ugly sites there but if you sift through theres some good stuff.

I used http://www.imaginerpower.com, they do a great job... They provided a great customization content management system platform(CMS) with great templates to choose from and great customer service. It enables me to build my sites with powerful online applications in a more timely fashion using PHP.
