Excellent cam except for the frame rates.  At 30p max I can wait for version 2.

And do I really need the headache of 256GB SSD for 30min of RAW footage?   It will help get competition going.

Tomorrow is Panasonic's turn to show their wares, with a bit of luck they will bring out some killer products like the AF200 and GH3.

I wouldn't mind having the RAW files, I'd almost certainly throw them away as soon as they were graded and piped out as cineform or something else, but having the extra latitude would be amazing. Tired of watching HDSLR footage completely fall apart in colour correction.

This camera is really interesting. This is definitely a wait-for-version-two situation though.

What a strange beast. It is very similar to what the Scarlet was originally going to be - it's not quite a 3k sensor, but it is $3k. I am intrigued by it. The internal battery is a weird choice, but everything else seems to make sense (especially as I have a bunch of EF glass). I'll wait and see what people say when they get to test it out.

That said, the FS700 is looking better and better - I just wish they would announce the timing and cost of the 4k recorder so I know how reasonable the upgrade path will be.

EF glass is going to be really cropped on this camera... super 16 is around a 3x crop factor so even your super-wide 15 EF-S lens will become a 45mm "normal" focal length.  You'd have to crop the centre out of an 8mm fisheye just to get to 24mm!

Canon SLR glass was never meant to go on a camera with a sensor crop this small. Odd.

Very true - I guess I would be using my Tokina 11-16 for almost everything. Weird.

crop factor could kill this camera.  and the internal battery.  but this is still an interesting camera.

Its an 1.9x crop since the sensor is the same as the GH2 it seems a M4/3.  So With a fast lens like the F0.9 Voigtlander you really are not limited by the DoF offerings.

I love my GH2 and prefer it for stock since you do actually want something to be in focus other than noses. But if you need even thinner DoF you can.

Definitely not the same sensor as the Panasonic GH2. This sensor is smaller than 4/3rds by a pretty significant margin: the whole area of the sensor is 16.64 mm x 14.04 mm and the recording area for video is 15.6 mm x 8.8 mm.

sqrt((16.64^2)+(14.04^2))=21.8mm or about 0.85 inches. And that's of the entire sensor... the portion used for video is windowed from that, not just letterboxed but cropped in both X and Y

EOShd has a good graphic:

Just found out about it and your post cemented it so what are we talking about a 2.3x crop here?     Seems I read conflicting info on Twitter. Thanks for the comparison.

Thats a pretty big difference to the GH2 sensor and it is not known for terrific low light!    Certainly is a killer camera for Green screen work if anything.  They need to get a 5k version of this with higher frame rates and an APS C and you got yourself a killer package.

This camerais going to be miserably bad in low light. Rated at 800 but stops at 1600?  The extra stops of latitude means you could push it I guess... but it's going to be a mess.

I actually really like the 2.5K resolution. I think this is what canon should be doing: just output video at a resolution that scales well from the sensor you've got, I'll worry about exporting it as 1080p or whatever I want in post.  2.5K is just enough to keep the pixel density low but give a respectably jump up from 1080p for panning and scanning or downscaling.

They've gotten some stuff right here: Built in large, high-res monitor: love it. 2.5inch SSD media: love it (but wish they sold $20 casings with beefier connectors) price: amazing. Lens mount: perfect. Included software: unbelievable.

Non-interchangeable battery: crazy. No HDMI out: nonsense. Sensor size: Way, way, way too small. Touch screen: fine, but still needs two physical scrolling wheels: one for shutter angle, one for aperture. No hotshoe: silly. Frame rate maxes out at 30p at all resolutions: bizarre. Thunderbolt: frustrating, I'd take USB3.0 any day.

Agreed that this camera will be a killer for green screen: RAW and sharp. Amazing.

This camera is full of contradictions. The form factor is apparently to make it easier to hand held etc, yet the ASA rating and sensor size mean it'll be awful in low light. Weirder the more I think about it.

There are iso 1600 samples and they are far from awful IMHO. But isn't 1600 a bit low...

Has anyone seen RAW footage from the camera yet? Are there a few seconds of 2.5K cinemaDNG anywhere online or as torrents?
