I have a top banner image size of 1000 px wide, I have been looking at photos and even the horizontal ones will not fit, if stretched into that area without some kind of distortion. How does one resolve this?

Most likely, you'll need to start with a medium-sized file. Sizes are based on widthXheight so you may find a stitched (or cropped) panorama that will be smaller in download size.

You'll probably need to crop the photo to the height you need once you've sized it down to 1000px wide. When I'm working on a project like this and I've found the image I want to use, in Photoshop, I like to make the background its own layer then change the canvas size. This will show the canvas area only and I can move the photo around the space for the best place to crop and/or resize.

hope that helps!
