Help about 3D modelling/render

I'm studing as an industrial designer and I'm also a photographer. As you know I will and have to use/learn 3D programs. They claim that they teach us at school but its not enough because they are very short classes. I had classes for 3Ds max and modo. 3Ds max looks harder than modo so I prefer modo for now. But they only told us about basic shapes thats all. I tried lots of researches on web but couldnt find what I want. Im looking for main commands and tips. And some render tips would be great. Are there any sites to help me with this? Or do you advice any other programs for me?
