Starting on Monday, iStockphoto is launching our Make the Difference holiday campaign and you can help!

We are asking our customers to use up those remaining credits in their accounts and download a few more files so that we can reach our goal of 50k extra files sold before December 13th. In order to reach as many customers as possible, we will be spreading the message far and wide through email and newsletters, social media, online banners and our many partners in this campaign.

How can you help? We are hoping to have fancy Facebook covers for you to put on your timelines that say “I’m an iStock artist and my downloads count”. You can also spread the good word through your creative contacts.

In case you’re wondering, this will have no impact on your royalties. You might even see a nice boost.

Once our goal is reached, we will give $50,000 to the top most voted charities on all of our international Facebook pages. Even if you don’t download a file, you can still vote for your favourite charity on our Facebook page.

“I’m an iStock artist and my downloads count”

Indeed, and the current crippled BM and part-broken site don't help my downloads, which like many many others have suffered dreadfully for two months.

This announcement was simply meant to loop in the community on a marketing effort that is starting Monday.

Is there an actual link to the charity voting page?
All I'm seeing is a bunch of images from the usual pushed contributors being pimped on the facebook page - I do not see an actual link to any charity voting page, or a post about it.
Nothing under the events tab or any of the other tabs.
Nothing in the first two scrolls of the page load either.

An actual link to the promo page where we can actually vote - would be helpful.

Oh dear, not sure if I understand any of this. In fact, I am sure I do not understand any of it. Ah well, all will be revealed on Monday so for once in my life I am looking forward to Monday.

^ They want clients to use their credits before they expire. That's it. Given the fact that the site doesn't work properly, telling clients their credits have expired will be the final straw for many people.

The giving to charity bit is great and deserves a wooyay, but the delivery of this is odd. IS acts like it did back in '04 when it comes to comms, but we're not there anymore are we. We are all on the downturn.

ETA: That's not shooting the messenger BTW, it's a good idea at a not-good time.

/"I’m an iStock artist and my downloads count is broken" lol.... sorry... had to do it smile))

Nice touch...

But it does make me wonder what more can we do for Istock when it ask us for help and when will Istock start doing something we ask them to do for us? You know, simple answers to some questions... God forbid a pay raise or something "fairytaily" smile)))

Honestly, the most effective promotion would be a bug free site and happy customers and contributors. You totally underestimate this simple rule which holds even more true in these connected times.

Begging for downloads when too many things are screwed up has a slightly desperate touch IMHO ... Although I certainly do like the charity aspect.

I will donate 100% of my earnings for the month of November and match it out of my own personal account (and request that IS or Getty do the same) that are above and beyond what I made last November, when they could actually find and purchase my images.

here is a clue, fix the site first, then let's talk about being charitable when we as contributors can afford to.

I´m not a native english speaker, so maybe I miss some "tones" in this announcement.

For my understanding this is something with a bad taste.

If iStock want´s to support some charity organizations it´s OK. Use this for advertising and promotion, like other companies do.

But asking customers to spend more money/credits first, and after reaching a "goal" (how are you going to measure this?) and then give some percent of the extra money you expect to a charity organization is…., well… irritating.

No extra files sold, no charity?

Charity should not be a service in return boosting downloads.

BTW a german brewery had a very successful eco campaign by advertising to reforest 1 square meter of destroyed rainforest for every beer case you buy. They not raise the price and they not ask people to drink more beer in advance to do so, they just did.

I don't understand this either. IS already has the money for credits in the bank. Using unused credits doesn't bring in more money for IS, just more money into our accounts when credits are used to license.

Is this an indicator that the credit program will be going away?

"In case you’re wondering, this will have no impact on your royalties. You might even see a nice boost."

I think this was in case we thought the donation would come partially from our part of the fee instead of all from the IS budget, as it should, yes?

In any case, how do we know what 50k extra amounts to? Is there a certain amount of dls from last year for a certain time period? It just doesn't seem like a good marketing campaign. Sorry.

50,000$ from 50,000 dls or $50,000?

That is the word that came to my mind first when I read this too.  I'm not sure what you're hoping -- since they've already paid for the credits, the only thing you can be doing with this is to try to plead with them to return to the site and buy again -- and all it will do is just show them how screwed up the site and search have become.  While I'm sure someone's heart was in the right place for this, I think it's a bad idea.  I'm sure we'd all love to have buyers come back here, but it ought to be to a site that works better, or you'll just lose them again.

Just a thought: maybe the old credits of clients need to go because new credits will be bought at a different place next year?

this is slightly off-topic, but i thought i'd mention here that there is an istockphoto team over at kiva who have already loaned over 32.000$ to small businesses around the world via micro credits.

(yes, this has nothing to do with the current camapaign - only with making a difference "in general". so if anyone wants to join, i'm sure the team can take some more growth)
