Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 2:54PM | It looks like I'm going to be just a couple hundred RC's short of maintaining my current royalty rate for 2013.
I nearly doubled my portfolio this year. This seems really out of whack to be penalized for working harder.
Any advice from iStock admins?
Should I just intend to triple my workload next year? |
Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 3:06PM | So, you've uploaded less than 170 images this year? Tough. |
Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 3:08PM | Hopefully they cut you some slack. |

Yeah, I don't know what to say. With the overwhelming number of uploads, just 170 more images isn't going to keep you in place.
eta: Actually, checking out your port, it's only 66 or so in 2012. Not that they aren't nice, but ...

Absolutely! They SHOULD after all the snafus we've been experiencing since September, but that would only too fair to us contributors and FAIR doesn't seem to be in the venacular of iStock these days.
Hey Hillary, I'm in the same boat as you - hard to believe that I'll be dropping a commission level (BARELY missing the bar) .

Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 3:47PM | You are selling well with so few images. Keep it up, you have "it"! |

You have some great images, but unfortunately a small portfolio. Small boats are going to get tossed in the big waves. You still have this month right? Here's what I would do: Make some phone calls, contact the art directors of travel magazines, business, advertising agencies, whatever you think your market is for your work. (Again, it's really great) Tell them who you are, the situation with istock and how you are just short of keeping your royalty rate. "I know this is going to sound crazy, but I am just a few credits short... perhaps you might be interested in purchasing one of my photos? If you have a couple of minutes, check out my portfolio link here...thanks" A phone call would be more direct and quick, something clever that can at least get their attention, and who knows? They might just be looking for that right image...
Unfortnuately, Istock is not your agent. In the future we're all going to have to go the extra mile to keep our earnings. You can do this!

Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 4:29PM | A few hundred is still attainable - who knows what December may bring. Hang in there. I was on target to go up a level, but after Sept, I'm going to be several thousand off now. No hope for me. |

Yes, it is tough to upload more than 170 images. What is your point? |

I've uploaded 314 images in the last month and a half, which enabled me to go up a comission level before the end of the year. Shoot, upload repeat, will get you back to that level next year. |

Sean, you've reported that you've experienced a steady decline in sales/income, too.
If you can't stay in place, how can anyone? I guess that was the point of my thread. You can attack the size of my portfolio or you can appreciate it as a statistical sample: 20% increase in portfolio = drop in royalty rate. Thanks, iStock. Merry Christmas. |
Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 10:35PM | When a portfolio matures (such as yours, mine, Sean's, countless others), I look at the selling timeframe of images like an conveyor belt. Even though new images are getting on, others are getting off on the other end as they get older. It takes a steady addition of new content to even have a chance of staying even. The smaller the portfolio, the larger the impact of even a few files "stepping off the conveyor".
Just my thoughts....

Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 10:37PM | ^ Also the impact of a few successful images either disappearing from BM or being usurped by newer better images is correspondingly much larger. |

Makes sense |
          Posted Mon Dec 3, 2012 11:55PM | My portfolio grew by 40% in 2012.
46% of my pics are less than 2 years old.
My earnings allready dropped by 33% compared to 2011
and 49% compared to 2010.
Yet I will drop another 10% just by the stupid RC's in 2013.
I truly feel it is completly unfair the way this sytem is handled.
As somebody pointed out to me yesterday: My pics have made istock a million dollars so far, this is the way I am being thanked for that.
And after last years many many mistakes, glitches and bugs: istock/Getty you might really consider not letting ANYBODY drop a level in 2013.
We have already moved to a cheaper place, we have given up our studio, I am not even buying pine nuts anymore, whats next?
