Just curious...because I'm sure someone out there knows that answer to this...(and I've sent a support ticket a couple weeks back, but haven't heard back yet)..

is the Zeitgeist list a feature that is updated regularly, or is it obselete?  And, is there a prerequisite for being added to it (ie Exclusive-status, number of files, downloads, etc.).

It's updated monthly as you can see from the drop down list on top of it - you can go back in time as well. It's all done automatically, so any contributor can get in there with the right files at the right time.

Don't ask how they come up with the figures, though. I never heard any explanation how those are calculated...

Thanks for the reply...

Yeah, so if I'm reading it right, it's just average downloads per file, calcluated automatically...

So...and I'm asking selfishly I guess - theoretically some random person like, say, me, with 7.6 downloads per file, could be on the list?  But then again, if it's automatic, I would automatically be on the list...so, it must not be.

i'm sure i'm missing something...wouldn't be the first time =)

I don't think that's what zeitgeist is about.

I was on the zeitgeist list for many months, and the only reason why that I could think of was that I had uploaded more files than other people in a certain month; and then the list just wasn't updated for some time. I haven't looked at that list in a long time.

Think I'm beginning to understand then...it's a list of top 'Zeitgeist' contributors (with some sort of mysterious formula calculating such 'Zeitgeist' status)...and then they're listed in order of AVERAGE DOWNLOADS PER FILE...yes?  so AVERAGE DOWNLOADS PER FILE isn't the REASON they're listed, it is merely the ORDER of their zeitigeist listing?  Kind of makes sense I guess...

For audio files the zeitgeist formula appears to be comparative month on month so, the sum total of files sold in the month of October has to be reached and then exceeded for November. The higher the exceeding figure then the more likely one features in zeitgeist (there could be other criteria that randomises those that appear but essentially you have to out-do yourself and some to get in there).

Hmmm...I guess I'm still having a problem understanding how some nebulous formula (that no one seems to understand) coincides and coexists with two very clear and simple titles for each list: 'Contributors on the Rise' (okay, so, the percentage increase, got it) and 'Average downloads per file' (which, seemingly, should be just that, average downloads per file).  Either lose the simple headings, which, if they're not in fact, what they seem to be, are very misleading, or go with the headings, in which case...calculate and post what the headings imply...

I'm sure there are thresholds that must be met first before the simple "average dl/file" calculation kicks in. Number of DLs in previous month; number of uploads, etc.

Like the BM algorythm, Redeemed Credit levels, etc. there are many things here whose calculation is a mystery.

Yes, so a simple answer should come down from 'on high' (Lobo, you're smart, please comment and provide clarity...=)

For example, you're considered once you have X number of uploads / or X number of downloads

simple.  easy.  like that.

Well, I always thought that the 'average downloads per file' is the average of your entire portfolio.  ie  Cont. A sells 30% of his port in Nov and Cont B is selling 42% of his port.  Cont. B gets featured.    But, I really don't know for sure.
