A friend is complaining in fb:
the world needs a new stock photo site with 100% non-cheesy photos. it's ridiculous how hard it is to find a decent photo...
... Istockphoto has tons of good/decdent photos too. They're just hidden under a mountain of suits shaking hands and women laughing alone with salad

Suffice to say I don't know what's been done to the BM yesterday, or in fact if anything was done to that or some other factor. I more or less gave up trying to see what was happening with it long ago. Whatever the case, in it's present state it certainly isn't in my favour.

It seems to me that we're increasingly being treated as pawns here in some ever more complicated game being played out by our "reseller". The Powers That Be here need to put their cards on the table. If they don't want us exclusives, and aren't going to give us a proper chance to sell our work here, then perhaps they could just tell us.

Most of us are here primarily to sell our work after all. It's why we bother to put our work here.

I think they are telling us by not telling us, if that makes sense.

Well, they're doing research. I just did a survey they sent me about search results. Presented with an image of best match search results, had to judge if I liked the results or not. Four pages worth.

Did you like the results, or is that confidential?  At least they are doing something proactive.  Too bad they don't come in here and let us know that.

I guess this one is the biggest site problem.
Because downloads almost stopped (not a sharp drop, a sudden stop for video downloads) since January 16th.

Normally, I have had download slowdowns for few days (when there is BM changes/updates/tweaks or site maintenance).
But this time, download stoppage took a week and it's not over yet.

I have one video download in almost a week (this is even worse than December).
Actually my downloads were fine until Jan 16th, but something happened on that day and downloads almost stopped.

I don't think customers are suddenly left the site.

Interestingly; I had only one video download in a week and it was on Sunday, when there was no site maintenance.

Hope they're doing those surveys also with real world, random buyers. And comparing results between iStock and competing sites.

This has got to be the best description of a stock site, ever.

I have 18600 images in IS, all kind of images since 2006, i can very easily tell when something is wrong with BM just with the results, let me tell guys: the BM is still broken. My suspicion is that when they changed software in september, all adjustments made during prior years had been deleted, something like a "formated bm", on top of that they flooded IS with thousands of getty agency files, with huge keyword problems, a perfect storm. Just an opinion.

it's pretty clear. Search Team has lost the control over the BM. Really !

^ I don't judge BM by my sales but by what comes up when I do a one keyword search and a multiple keyword search and the BM still stinks.  Old files are still first for one keyword and two or more keywords still returns a very strange assortment of files.  I would go elsewhere as a buyer.

Yes, it looks the same to me.

I suppose, they have lost the keyword relevancy data and now we have the chaotic mixture of old and VERY new images. Well, at first is sounds good, but some of those old images often do not even have many downloads. And what is even worse, there is a lot of irrelevant new - 0 DL images which are occupying first pages of BM for days! There is complete lack of new (but not very new) images with DOWNLOADS. And also the popular - middle aged images and non existent...

Just tested BM search with three keyword combination, vintage camera isolated. First 8 images are from the same series, some dude on pink background making faces (with old camera). And not much further back, another huge series, a man with plastic toy camera and vintage luggage.

I understand that there can't be keyword relevancy data for new images that have zero views and downloads, but COULD YOU PLEASE spread series on the few first pages and not put them side by side. It just looks bad for the buyers, like there wouldn't be enough different images in the collection to choose from.

If keyword relevancy for older files is for some reason destroyed for good, maybe iStock should just come clean and say so. Meanwhile, equal weight should be given to older good performers and new content so new relevancy data can be attained.

to spread series the database/search engine must know that a group of files are a related sub group..i think with the actual organization of file it's impossible. Maybe with a new way of submitting series would be possible (grouping series on submission and showing in the search only a cover image with some indication that is a group and not a single image, then open a page like a "lightbox")

Not same day uploads by the same contributor lumped together. Should do the trick in 99% of the cases. IMHO similars are never a good thing in BM search unless the position is earned with huge download success.
