UPDATE ON VIEWS

Hi Everyone, here is the skinny on views.

Only views from logged in customers count as a view. The site updates the view stat every 30 minutes or so.

With the launch of cash sales, customers can choose an image and proceed to the checkout without creating an account. This is why you are seeing downloads and no corresponding view.

Deep Meta does not calculate views. It just reflects what the site calculates.

Let me know if you have more questions and I'll see what I can find out.

@ oldladybird, understand that CC are not calculated in the view count, but was it always that only log-in customers view were counted?

From the information I received, they have not made any changes to views in years.

As for views reporting. I assume that the views feature worked for a couple of days and then stopped working again. I that correct? I did see a few views show up about a month ago and since then... nothing.

I don't understand. Are you telling us that views are working OK as always but what changes is only that 90% of users are not logging in anymore?

Are 90% of users using CC now? Because the view count dropped so dramatically from September that I always assumed it's simply broken.

If that were true, then my best guess would be, that we've lost 90% of the traffic. But that is unreal, something must have changed.

If the number of views is working properly, and that counts only those log-in person view our photo, then I do not see how we can now do to know if a photo works or if it is well indexed and therefore these keywords are correct ?? !

They keep telling us that views are correct and this is the closest we get to an admittance that there's a big problem with buyers disappearing, but nobody seems to want to believe it.

I have flag counter connected to most of my photos - therefore I can monitor the total view count of my portfolio.

The view count has not dropped since spetember - it is pretty much the same level all the time. IMHO the view counts on istock have been broken in September and are now not working correctly.

It's like with BM - also nothing was changed in it directly there but suddenly it stopped working like before.

Who knows, maybe istock sales are increasing but contributors' counters are working "as good" as the view counter.

OldLadyBird -

I really get the feeling that you guys, en masse, are whistling past the graveyard ever since September 2012. The site is still not counting views the way it was back before the "Tweak." I used to be able to tweet the availability of a new file being accepted and get a minimum of 30 views from just that tweet alone. After the "Tweak", I don't get a recording of any views when I tweet - or share on linked In - or that I would from Facebook if you would ever fix that.

Here's the deal - iStock asks us to go exclusive with them, but they take away the ability for us to run our own businesses on a somewhat educated, if limited, basis. If, for no other reason, the old views gave us a sense of the popularity of an image. Why is this important? To me, it is important because views was at least one factor that I could use when determining which file to make E+. Not the only criteria I used, mind you, but one criteria.

As I have said early on - views is a glaring daily reminder to contributors that this site is either broken completely or has been fundamentally altered by design in a way that has not been fully disclosed to contributors. Regardless, you have to know that you are taking away the few indicators that contributors have to make smart business decisions about how they manage their portfolio.

I find it hard to believe that the view counters are working as they always have, if this is true then buyers have said goodbye in a coardiated effort at the end of August/September..... without even telling us why.

This is also a concern of mine. We are told the accounting of images sold are absolutly correct. iStock says sales are doing just fine (as expected) and yet nearly all the comments on the stats forums talk of terrific drops in sales.

Then we are told that the view counter is working just fine and yet this could not be true, even with cash sales, unless the traffic here has dropped to nearly nothing.

Also, can people really make purchases without logging in? If so why? That sounds like asking for trouble by not having users identify themselves before making a purchase.

The counters are definitely not working like before September. I just checked and I cannot see a single image I uploaded in December that has gotten more than 2 views, most even have 0. In earlier times all images would get at least a couple of views in the weeks after uploading.

Sales are definitely down, but not by 90% or something of course. More like 35-40% from what I can see since I am monitoring statistics here myself. Christmas time also does not really count, the two Christmas weeks always had very low sales.

Of my last 32 accepted photos, there has been 12 views... one of those had three and a purchase. The other 31 have had no sales and 0-2 views.

Views are not being recorded correctly. An hour ago I went to someone's portfolio, clicked on two images, one had two views the other had zero. Checked again a few minutes ago and the counts are still 2 and zero.

Perhaps even more disconcerting is that TPTB don't seem to recognize that the views aren't being recorded properly as I would assume that Oldladybird is getting her info from someone who should know.  Getty doesn't have 'views' stats.
