We're happy to announce an ongoing project that's very long overdue.

We are in the process of moving our existing JPEG illustrations from under their current categorization as 'Photos' to 'Illustrations'. This includes any artwork that isn't vector-based: Drawings, paintings, collages, digital paintings, and so on.

This has been a much-requested feature for a very long time and we're thrilled that it is underway on iStock.

We know there will be a lot of questions so we've prepared an initial FAQ. Questions or comments? Please visit the Raster Illustration Discussion Thread. Thanks!

What does this mean for clients?

What does this mean for contributors?

What does this mean for existing JPEG illustrations classified as 'Photos'?

What if my photos accidentally get moved into 'Illustrations'?

What if I have JPEG illustrations but they didn't get moved into 'Illustrations'?

I upload 3D renders, does this mean my files will be moved too?

What about scans of historic engravings/etchings?

Will this affect file prices?

UPDATE: March 11th

We've now completed text changes to the File Closeup page (changing the word 'vector' to 'illustration' to reflect the new JPEG file type). We have begun identifying existing illustrations (paintings, sketches, digital paintings, charcoal drawings, pen and ink, etc) within our collection and will be moving them into the 'Illustration' category over the next several months. Please visit the Raster Illustration Discussion Thread if you have any questions.

What will this mean for clients?

When clients search for illustrations they will soon see all vector and JPEG illustrations on the site. From there they will be able to filter their search results to view only vector artwork if they choose.

For clients looking only for photography, they will no longer see JPEG illustrations when they apply the photo search filter.

What will this mean for contributors?

At this point in time nothing will be changing on the contributor side of the site.

Because these files are JPEGs (and not vector EPS files), they will still need to be uploaded to the 'Photo' inspection Q. We realize this isn't ideal and we are looking at better solutions but for now we are unable to create a separate upload process.

However, to make things easier for our contributors we will be putting a new inspection process in place. JPEG illustration submissions will now be inspected by illustration inspectors as opposed to the photo team. We also plan to introduce some basic training materials for illustrators submitting JPEGs (and in the meantime you might want to check out our recent articles Tips for Photographing Your Artwork, Digital Painting 101 and an Intro to Raster Mediums).

For those of you who are currently Exclusive vector artists but non-Exclusive photographers (who would like to submit JPEG illustrations), the situation will stay as it is now. Exclusivity across these file types will still be separated at this time. We know this probably isn't the best solution, but in order to get this project up and running as quickly as possible we decided that it was fastest to leave things as they currently are.

This also applies to our current Redeemed Credit targets: They will be staying the same. So if you're a JPEG illustrator your RCs will be included in the Photo targets while vector targets will remain separate.

The good news is your JPEG artwork will no longer be buried in the photo search results. We'll also be able to feature these illustrations on the Illustration Landing Page which we're excited about.

What does this mean for existing JPEG illustrations classified as 'Photos'?

We will be moving as many JPEG illustrations as possible from the 'Photo' category into the 'Illustration' category. We have identified about 50,000 files to move initially.

After the initial migration we will continue to search the collection to find any JPEG illustrations that were missed. These files will be added to the Illustration collection on an ongoing basis.

What if my photos accidentally get moved into 'Illustrations'?

While we've done our best to isolate the existing JPEG illustrations on iStock for migration into 'Illustration', this will be a manual process. Mistakes happen and there is a chance that a few photos might get moved that shouldn't have, though we've tried to minimize this as best we can.

After the launch of this project we will be going through the newly categorized illustrations for any accidental photo mis-categorizations. We will then manually move these back into the 'Photo' category.

We will let you know when this work has finished and at that point, if you do notice any photo stragglers, we ask that you contact the Contributor Relations team so we can have these photos recategorized.

What if I have JPEG illustrations but they didn't get moved into 'Illustrations'?

As above, the migration of existing JPEG illustrations on the site will be a manual process. We will continue to search the collection to identify any files we've missed. After the initial migration if you still have old JPEG artwork online, you will be able to contact Contributor Relations to have the files moved.

In addition, new submissions will still be categorized as 'Photos' when they are first approved. This is because we can't change our upload process at this time. However, we will be flagging these files on our end and moving them over to 'Illustrations' on an ongoing basis so don't worry, your files will be recategorized once online.

3D renders will remain where they are and will not be migrated to the 'Illustration' category.

I have scans of historic engravings and etchings in my portfolio, will those be moving under 'Illustration' too?

Yes, we would consider these as illustrations more than photos, so they will be moving as well.

How will this affect file pricing?

File pricing won't be changing with this move. In addition, raster illustrations will still be eligible for collections such as Photo+ and Exclusive+.
