This month, iStock will be joining the ranks of inspired pinners around the globe. Similar to our other social media channels, we'll be inspiring a broader creative audience with the quality and breadth of our content, while also driving brand awareness and traffic.

You'll notice boards like Tips and Tricks, The World of Mobile, Design Elements and Free Images to engage creatives with iStock's current free image of the week. We will also be highlighting our exclusive artists and showcasing locally relevant work; all attributed and linked accordingly. In addition to this, we will only be using small, watermarked images that link directly back to the file close up pages.

We know we’ve talked at great length in various threads about Pinterest and specifically about copyright protection. Getty Images is taking steps to add all iStock content to Image IRC in 2013. This means that all your content will be “fingerprinted”.

ImageIRC is a technology platform that enables images to be identified and attributed to their creators wherever they appear on the web. Currently, the ImageIRC contains over 139 million premium still images from 200 individual partners worldwide.

I understand that it's an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" situation, but won't it encourage those people who never read Ts & Cs to just share iStock images willy nilly?

I'm not a Pintrest expert to say the least. So I can't really comment on much. I do know it's a huge marketing tool right now and has a considerable amount of momentum. I think people who don't read T&C documentation aren't really the issue. It's people who actively snatch IP from where ever they can find it. Obviously they can find away to do it no matter where the files are. This initiative is something we feel will drive more views and potential sales to the community.

Again, I don't have any Pintrest sorcery in my bag of tricks so I can only speculate. Lets see what other people with more experience with the site have to say.

Thanks, Lobo. Like you, Pinterest has passed me by! However, I can see that it has great potential if the users are educated in their responsibilities.

One thing that bothers me rather is that if people are seeing watermarked iStock images on the iStock Pinterest site, won't they think it's OK to use others wherever they like? I find several of mine used with watermarks every day and am constantly badgering CE with new ones to follow up, so I'm hoping I'm wrong!

Clicking on the istock URL under a pinned photo give the following:

Suspicious Link
This link redirects visitors to another site - it may link to spam or other inappropriate content.

With the option to:

Back to Pinterest · Continue to Link · More Info

I don't know what you mean. You will have to be more clear. Which file, what is giving you that error message?

Sure. I clicked on the 'follow us at Pinterest' link in the email, then on Pinterest click on a category, say, 'Tips & Tricks' then click on a link under an image, like istockpho.to/15vrDUh. This brings up a new page with a big exclamation mark and the text above.


ETA: it's the same for all the istockphoto.to links

I'm not seeing any error messages or warnings. Could it be something on your end? Anyone else seeing these errors?

^ I went through this and chose a cat photo. Clicked on the istock link. Got the '!' mark and the 'Suspicious link' message.

I too am getting a suspicious link warning on them. I'll email you a screenshot.

Hrmm, alright. I will continue to try to recreate.

Firefox, IE and Chrome all have the same behaviour. Windows PC, in France.


On the other hand, clicking on an image on, say, the Tips & Trick 'board' (or whatever it's called), then clicking on the large version that comes up, does link to IS without the warning page.

yes, is same for me here, I'm using Chrome if this helps

Yes, the link under the image is showing the error, image itself is ok  

I got it. I figured out what is happening. This is actually not going fully live until Monday from what I recall. So the link backs are probably in a weird state. How about I see about getting all that sorted with the Marketing team in the morning. It's something we need to initiate from what I understand.

Okay, whew. I thought I was the only one who knew how to use the internet for a second there. Clearly things were in reverse.

Yeah, having iStock listed as a "Suspicious" would not be good for traffic


 

I am getting the "suspicious link" warning as well.
