The Next iStockalypse is...

It’s been many long years since we had an iStockalypse event in North America. In fact, the last event was wayway back in 2009.

We know we’re due for a North American event, so first up on the iStockalypse 2013 roster: We’re heading to California for some LOS ANGELES love mid MAY.

In sync with our 2013 iStockalypse strategy (see below), our focus for the event is to nurture and educate our existing contributor base.

We’ll have:
  • A buzzing home base from which we’ll host our education-packed sessions
  • Walkabout shoots for all attendees
  • A shoot day ‘on location’ for lucky ticket holders
  • We’ll also review your portfolios, discuss your customized shoot plans and review your shots taken in dedicated time slots

We’ll have more details regarding tickets and attendance coming soon, but we can tell you that this event is for all iStockers. For everyone around the globe who can’t make it to the USA this time… stay tuned, and stay excited - we’ve got more announcements on the way. Be assured though, iStockalypse is coming to a city near you.

What is the Event Schedule?

Daily Schedule:

Each day will have it’s own flavor, but each will start early in the morning and go into the evening. Your days will look something like this:

DAY 1 Monday May 13:

Home Base/ Seminars & Sessions: Workshops at Home Base (the central iStockalypse meeting place) are designed to elevate your success. Some topics covered at these sessions include:
• Company Strategy, Direction & Developments
• State of the Market & Visual Trends in the Industry
• Advanced Keywording & Insights
• Stills to Video
• Legal Aspects of Los Angeles & Surrounding areas
• Storyboarding and Inspiration
Access: Full Attendees and Open Ticket Holders

DAY 2 Tuesday May 14:

Home Base/ Information Central: Today Home Base is the epicenter for information and feedback. iStock and Getty Images experts are on hand to provide portfolio reviews, shoot proposal feedback, general feedback, and talk shop. There will be plenty of space to meet up with fellow artists and this is where our walkabout shoots leave from and return to.
Access: Full Attendees and Open Ticket Holders

Walkabouts & Group Shoots: Truly authentic content is about the details and the surroundings. There’s no better way to get authentic imagery of Los Angeles than a combination of Editorial shots and by taking models into the city to capture images with the cityscape in the background. Several group shoots a day will be held. All that’s needed is grab your camera, put on your walking shoes and show up at Home Base.
Access: Full Attendees and Open Ticket Holders

DAY 3 Wednesday May 15:

Location Setups: A series of lifestyle concepts, we’ll set the stage for Full Attendees to shoot setups focusing on daily life in Los Angeles that will take attendees into the outdoors for some diversity themed leisure shots.
Access: Full Attendees

Side Shoots: While these shoots are optional and arranged by you; we’ll work with you in advance of the event to assist you to prepare your shoot via the ‘SP’ template. We’ll work with you to develop your proposal and give you the tools to execute your shoot with greater success. We’ll do our best to schedule an Art Director or Technical Director to join you on set.
Access: Open Ticket Holders

DAY 4 Thursday May 16:

Shoot Feedback: An intense session to review yesterday’s shoot and discuss the content with the team of experts from iStock and Getty Images.

Access: Full Attendees and Open Ticket Holders

Wrap Up Party: It’s impossible to have an iStockalypse without a gathering of all the fantastic folks to celebrate, imbibe and plot our next big meet up.

Where is it located?

We'll be centered around the Santa Monica area of Los Angeles.

Staff are staying at the Hilton Doubletree Santa Monica. It’s a few blocks inland from the pier and the beach – but it’s a good deal (especially if you book online) and it’s a nice spot tucked back away from the bustling beach. We’ll have a shuttle hopping between here and the Home Base location.

You aren’t required to stay at the same hotel, but we’re hoping you do – it’s always great to have everyone centralized.

What do I need to bring?

- The weather should be moderate and pleasantly warm: however prepare for the possibility of rain or chilly temperatures by packing for the unknown. We’re doing everything as planned, regardless of the weather. You can check the latest forecast here: http://www.santamonica.com/weather/

- Bring good shoes. Whether you’re joining the walkabouts (and we’ll walk!) or just planning to relax: it’s never a bad thing to have good sturdy shoes. Bring shoes that are comfortable and you can work in all day.

- Bring your camera, memory cards, card reader, cords, chargers – and while not necessary - we always suggest you also bring tripod, speedlights and a reflector as you never know when you’ll want them. If you’re traveling from outside North America, you may need to bring an adapter: http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity.htm#voltage_table . You do not need to bring light kits or your entire work station.

- Bring your gadgets. Whether you like to lug around a suitcase full of odd props “just in case” or if you have a nifty little LED light accessory – there’s no reason you can’t bring it. Have fun, be inspired, and take advantage of the opportunity to play a little with fellow artists and peers.

- Bring your portfolio to be reviewed: Make your selection before Day 2. Know what you want to get out of the review and prepare for it. While the Home Base location does have internet, we can’t rely on the connectivity (fact of life). Whether you take screen shots of your iStock portfolio, put some images onto a USB stick, save your selected images to a display device such as ipad/ tablet, or bring a physical book to review… Just come prepared with it. Be prepared to show your portfolio to the reviewer. Staff will have laptops for your USB stick, and hopefully browsing capabilities via internet, but we cannot rely on the internet – BRING YOUR PORTFOLIO in a medium that doesn’t depend on connectivity.

- Bring what you need for your Side Shoot. If you’re not getting/ renting it in LA, bring it with you. This can be anything from a few extra model releases... to a prop you use as part of your series project... to a pocket sized good luck charm. Again, you aren’t required to arrange a Side Shoot, but if you do, you’ll need to prepare for it.

- FULL TICKET ATTENDEES:
o Also bring props to make your Day 3 shoot unique and to help develop your concept
o Also bring your laptops to edit your images and review on Day 4

iStockalypse 2013 Program

You may have noticed that we’ve taken an exceptionally long break between iStockalypse events. Well, it’s because we’ve been busy, heads down, and doing our homework. We’re always listening to what you say and we’ve been working out how to make the iStockalypse events better, more frequent, and more lucrative for you.

For years now, we’ve expanded the iStockalypse events to involve more of the community and sought ways to share the tangible and intangible aspects of the get-togethers. From the advent and expansion of the Open Tickets (formerly known as Social Tickets) to expanding offerings for attendees - the goal has always been to make the ‘next one’ more awesome.

We’ve heard you say that while it’s an excellent opportunity to work with models, locations, Art & Technical Directors, etc…. the shooting isn’t necessarily the favorite part of the event. In fact, the part that draws the community from far and wide is the opportunity to meet, mingle, connect and mind meld with other artists and importantly, to get more connected with the teams at iStock and Getty Images.

With that in mind, we’re approaching 2013 with a plan to reach and inspire more photographers.

Our 2013 plan is two-tiered:

  1. Empower and nurture the photographers in regions where we have a solid base of artists. Pool our creative resources into helping these photographers tailor-make their own shoots and get them linked in to hot local content needs. We need events here that provide the tools to the artists and focus on education, feedback and connectivity.
  2. Develop regions where we have low photographer participation (and hence content). Targeted at not only the existing photographers, but at the future iStockers. We need events here to sign up contributors and get them providing content, in a sustainable manner, from their corner of the world.

In summary:
  • There will be more events in 2013 and the events will occur all over the world.
  • We’ll have events in established regions where our focus is to educate iStockers and help them take their photography to the next level. We’ll provide more tools for creative research, increase access to resources and provide opportunities for proper feedback and discussion.
  • We’ll also have events in areas with very few iStockers – where we’ll work hard to recruit new artists and plant the seeds for sustainable photography.
  • All events will have a central location from which we operate (a home base), all events will have some sort of walkabout-style shoots with models, all events will have an education and portfolio feedback/ review component. All events will have opportunities to have fun and connect.
  • Some events may have iStock/ Getty set up shooting locations, and at some events it may make more sense for an Art Director to visit you at your personal ‘side’ shoot.

But overall, our focus is primarily to provide you with the tools to be successful and sustainable, no matter where in the world you are. We want to connect with you, and hope to see you this year at an iStockalypse!

iStock-a-what?

The iStockalypse was born in early 2005, as an official multi-day iStockphoto photography event.

Several times a year, contributing artists and photographers from the international iStock community come together to collaborate, share knowledge, and exchange tricks of the stock photography trade. iStock sets the stage for participants to launch into highly art-directed photo-shoots — carefully planning and selecting locations, local models, wardrobe, hair and makeup professionals, props, professional equipment and providing mentorship. Under savvy expert guidance, beginners and seasoned pros get to share what they know and create brilliant images with old and new friends.

The iStockalypse is not only about creating great local imagery. Our passion is growing artists and providing them with the tools and expertise to further their experience and education. We set the stage for attendees to broaden their knowledge in a series of seminars and activities designed to take their trade to the next level. Addressing topics from improving skills and discussing industry hot topics, to sharing wisdom through industry experts, the audience is eager and the Seminars offer a fantastic way for you to reach your audience.

Since the first event in Las Vegas, iStock has visited Seattle, Boston, Ljubljana, Prague, Austin, Barcelona, Marseilles, Buenos Aires, Malta, Berlin, Calgary, Istanbul, Cannes, Tokyo, London and Milan.
