Captions

In addition to the normal image title and description, all Editorial Use Only images require a short caption which shows the place and date on which the photo was taken and which describes the contents of the image accurately. This is very important. The person licensing the image needs to know exactly what the picture they are getting is, in order to use it properly.

Captions cannot be altered after you upload the file, even if the file has not yet been inspected.

You must get them right prior to upload.

Format

The format for captions is explained in the training manual here.

You must use this exact format: Location data - date data: caption descriptive content data.

The location data can be "City, County" or "City, State, Country".

Date data might be 'month date year" or "date month year" or in rare circumstances where the specific date isn't known just "month year".

Please ensure your captions are in this format or you will receive a rejection for 'Bad Caption'.

The most important thing is the order of the information: Place - Date: Description of content

For certain images e.g. aerial shots, shots from boats on an ocean, etc. you obviously can't add a city.

They should captioned as such At Sea, In Flight or In Space

Such as: At Sea, Baltic Sea - OCTOBER 12, 2010: The DFDS cargo and passenger ferry Lisco Gloria on fire south of Langeland in the Baltic Sea. 236 people has been safely evacuated.

or: In Flight - November 14th, 2010: Mid air refuelling of a General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon from the boom pod of a KC-135 Stratotanker.

Important points

If people are present in the image, mention them, even if they are not the main subject.

Do not write in ALL CAPS in your the captions and descriptions.

Be clear about the location you were taking the photo from. If you are on premises you may need consent. Any additional information you think might help the inspector can go into the description field (but not the caption text.)

Wikipedia

Large chunks of text direct from Wikipedia or similar sites and pasted into the caption or description fields are not allowed. Doing this will get your reject. You can certainly read Wikipedia or any other site for info, but please rewrite it into your own words. The Wikipedia license does not allow for you to use their text as your caption/description.
