Please see these two links

Link1

Link2

Link1 is the original view inside my lightbox. Link2 is when I tried to filter out the isolated on white images, but instead it only showed the isolated on white images. Am I doing something wrong? Or is the search broken?

From now on, the Keywording and Search forum is going to be home for posts and queries such as this, so let's move it over for you.

I believe it has always worked this way - in that NOT searches require an initial search term.  So, you could do a search first for say "male" and then do a search for "NOT isolated on white" and that would work.  So to answer your question, in a perfect world, it would work correctly as you did it - and no you aren't doing anything wrong - this is just a minor quirk.  The good thing is that this shouldn't impact buyers (because most of them will first search what they are looking for compared to what they aren't), but it is something that I'm sure is on the list to be fixed.
