If I wanted to do a search for "Paper" AND ("Tear" OR "Tearing") how do I do this in iStock's search engine?

Is it like this?
http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/117538/text/paper+AND+tear+OR+paper+AND+tearing

And are there any alternative ways of using the boolean search function to get the desired result?

You can use parentheses in the iStock search:

http://www.istockphoto.com/search/text/paper%20and%20(tear%20or%20tearing)/source/basic

Edit to add: Or, for your porfolio specifically:
http://www.istockphoto.com/search/portfolio/117538/text/paper+AND+(tear+OR+tearing)

Oh my gosh. I had no idea I could use parentheses. Thank you so much. The boolean search is way less confusing to me now.

Incidentally, you got the logic right. x AND (y OR z) is the same as (x AND y) OR (x AND z). But as to whether the iStock search gets the precedence of AND and OR correct, it's something I've never been willing to trust.
