IN THE NEWSLETTER/Article:

Where are the Files Coming From?

Vetta Section

Extremely High performing Non-exclusive files (from Main/Plus)

This is a TYPO. The Extremely High performing Non-Exclusive files will not enter into the Vetta Collection. The highest Non-exclusive files will move is into the Signature + Collection

General:

What are the price points going to be?
When we re-launch our collections the price points will be equal or very similar to what we currently have:
  • Main = Current Main Collection pricing
  • Signature = Current Exclusive Collection pricing
  • Signature+ = Current E+ Collection pricing
  • Vetta = Current Vetta Collection pricing

Will there be a way to sort on my "my uploads" page to see what files were placed where?
Yes – you will be able to see how your portfolio breaks down across the various collections.

What about our royalty rates, what's changing there?
There are no changes to royalty rates associated with the collections revamp.

Why are some file types not getting all collections?
As part of the overall aim to simplify things for our customers, we feel that introducing new price points and collections for any file types at this point is counter to that goal. We will monitor the performance of these new price tiers closely and continue to assess the opportunities for additional file types to be added.

What about Editorial content? Will editorial content also be moved between collections?
Editorial files will be moved around using the same methodology as creative images. The only difference is that the Vetta collection will NOT include any editorial imagery.

What will be the default collection shown to buyers when they search?
The default setting will be as it is now, where files from all collections and price points are shown. Buyers may then choose to narrow down their selection by using the price slider.

We are really looking forward to seeing how customers interact with the revised price slider. We do know, from previous iterations, that customers don't just use it to isolate less expensive content, rather, it's used to find the higher quality, higher cost images.

Will buyers be able to make their price slider selection sticky and exclude exclusive content from future searches?
There will be no way for a buyer to exclude exclusive content. In fact our aim is the opposite – to bring exclusive content even more front and centre on iStock.

What's going to happen to the files in the Value Collection (Dollar Bin)?
The files in the Value Collection that have generated a sale over the last year will be moved up into the Main collection. Those files that are in the Value collection presently that haven't experienced any downloads will remain active for the time being, including on Partner sites, as we assess what to do with this content. Exclusive files will not be automatically moved into the Partner Program. The Value collection will not be featured on iStock going forward.

What about 3rd party programs and scripts like DeepMeta?
These will be updated to accommodate the changes to the collections. As there are several large changes happening in phases, the changes made to the scripts and software will also have to take place over time and we will work with the developers to make sure the transition is a smooth as possible.

What will happen to E+ rasters, which had been in the Photo section but have now moved over to Illustration, will they drop in price now?
No. Files that were in E+ will simply transfer to the Signature+ collection, which is priced the same.

I liked having the ability to dictate which files could be added to E+, why are you taking this ability away from Contributors?
In order to optimize both each individual assets, and the performance of each collection overall, it is vital that we are able to create a strong relationship between quality and price.

Will it take longer for inspection?
None of these changes will lead to longer inspection times.

Will I no longer be able to choose what goes to Signature+ (formerly E+)? Will there be some option to nominate for Signature+ during upload the way we nominate for Vetta?
For the time being there will be no nomination process for files to be moved into E+. We are hoping to provide this down the road, but at this point don’t have a specific date in mind.

Not being able to nominate images for E+ is a real concern for contributors. Is there really no hope that this won't be reconsidered?
These are big changes for iStock and for our contributors as we alter the way that we move content into various collections. Our hope is that by removing the restrictions for the number of files you can nominate to Vetta, we provide contributors with greater opportunity to price their best assets at a high price point. If this proves to be a successful way to curate Vetta, then we can look at how we can adapt that process to allow exclusives the ability to nominate files to Signature +.

Can I still opt in or out of Vetta/TAC?
As stated in the article, we will be removing the opt-in functionality, however you can still nominate under the new structure and there will be no limits on nominations.

Moving files:

Will I be notified which files are being moved to different priced collections?
Due to the fact that we are moving around millions of files, it is prohibitive to notify contributors of all of those moves. When any movement of files takes place we will notify the contributors generally, and encourage you to then review your portfolio to see what changes have been made.

Can we appeal these movements?
No, we will not be accommodating any appeals on the movement of content from one collection to the other. These moves are intended to increase the performance of the content.

When will files reach the 'reasonable amount of time' for consideration for movement from one collection to the next?
It is our belief that at a high level 6 months is an appropriate length of time.

If non-exclusive content will also be mirrored on GI how can we highlight the Mirroring program as a benefit to Exclusives?
A very small amount of non-exclusive content will be mirrored on GI. Exclusives will retain a far greater ability to benefit from having their imagery re-merchandised on GI.

How long will my files be locked at that price? If they don't sell can I request they be moved?
Files wont’ be “locked” for any length of time. When we feel we have gathered enough information about any file to determine that it is under-priced or over-priced we will aim to make adjustments to optimize it, recognizing that some files will never sell regardless of their price. Our aim is to have a consistent approach to these decisions, to provide a more consistent relationship between price and quality for our customers. For that reason, we won’t be taking requests for file movements directly from contributors.

Mirroring:

What will get mirrored to Getty under the new collections scheme?
The Vetta and Signature Plus collections will be mirrored on Getty.

Will files still remain mirrored at Getty if they are already there?
Yes they will.

What happens to files mirrored at Getty if the files get moved to a lower collection on iStock?
Files that are on Getty will stay on Getty even if a file does move collections on iStock. The only time you'll see images be removed after mirroring is in the event you become non-exclusive, or if you close your account.

Have you gone through the entire collection one by one and evaluated every file?
Every file on iStock, ingested prior to September has been examined either on the basis of its performance and/or through a visual review.

Will the inspectors be deciding where my files will be placed or will they go through a 2nd queue where they are priced?
For the most part, exclusive files will start in the Signature Collection, and non-exclusive files will start in the Main Collection. Our content team will identify files that are appropriate for the higher price point collections and move them accordingly. None of these changes will lead to delays with the inspection process.

How does this affect the Partner Program?
It doesn't. Non-exclusives will still have all of their files mirrored there and exclusive contributors will still be able to choose whether to opt into the program or not.

What royalty rate will non exclusives earn from files in Signature+ that are mirrored to Getty?
Non-exclusives will receive 15% commission in the event we mirror Non-exclusive photo content on Getty.

I'm probably being really dim but I have a question about the Signature+ collection. It appears that this applies only to Photos. What will happen to those of us who have had a large quantity of rasters - which had been in the Photo section - moved over to Illustration? For example, quite a lot of my Victorian engravings are E+. Will they drop in price now?

Going to  be an interesting read...cautious welcome here, 7 collections was too many and confusing for buyers.

For E+ this should be done earlier, because leaving this to contributors brought a lot of diversity in quality of E+ collection. By doing it this way E+ will be real E+ collection done by content editors.

Where is the advantage here for exclusives ? I fail to see any. If I werent exclusive as long as I have a nice picture I get moved to the top along with and priced with the exclusives ? Again, where is the advantage of being exclusive now other than having Vetta images which sell less and less these days. Please, I await your reply.

Interesting news, I'm curious to see how it all goes

The one question that pops into my head is what is the "default" collection that people will search inside of? Will it default to a certain collection, or all of them?

Also, "Main" sounds like most people would gravitate to that, and its wording sounds like it houses all of the files on iStock (at least, to me that's how it seems). That could potentially leave a lot of exclusive files in the dust unintentionally.

So... are there new Getty grabs/cuts in to our royalties with this restructure?
Only seeing end pricing, not what contributors can expect to get percentage wise from these collection changes.

Is the collection formerly known as the dollar bin going away? If so, will those files land in the "main" collection?

Exclusives will still be able to decide if they want to participate in the PP.

"We want to simplify"

On the face of it, that sounds like a good idea, though I'm not sure that taking choices away from the artists in favour of a partly automated process sounds wise.

Will the simplification also be extended to royalty rates, with the lowered percentage for Vetta and Agency sales (which was never explained) being removed?

This is very bad news, i dont like the idea of someone else deciding which of my files should be E+ or main or whatever. I remember when vetta was introduced some of my files were considered for vetta, now None are ever considered. i am sure same will happened with E+ or whatever they want to hame it. todays news are very bad for me. I think this latest getty measure will make me move out from exclusivity. This is not good at all
