Recenlty I moved photography studio space and the new space was a little different, so I've been setting up my lights to accomdate the new space. The lighting is still a work in progress, but I had a couple of differnet versions that I'm deciding between.

The one of the left is a bigger softbox above him on the left of him.The one on the right is a smaller softbox directly above him. I'm a little undecided which version of lighting I like better. A couple of my non photographer friends like the one on the left better. I lean towards more the right side version, with more attention paid to the crafting of light on his face.

What do you guys think?

It depends compeltely on what yopu are trying to achieve - I don't especially think one is better than the other. 1 is a little more moody with the side lighting, 2 is a little more positive, friendly.

I'd say the left one is more to my liking with the addition that I would add a hair light. Because I like hair light, I think it's awesome

Without modification 2nd looks better.

Agreed. I don't think any can said to be "better" without knowing what you're aiming for.

I didn't have anything in mind that I was going for, other than attractive lighting.

Well, the one on the right looks more even, commercial and stocky. The one on the left looks more moody, creative and artistic. To me at least. If you're shooting clean and commercial subjects isolated on white, I'd go for the one on the right.

Nicely put Kelvinjay. That's exactly what I thought but just couldn't tell it so simply

Should you have some spare time and feel like going through my portfolio to tell me what's stocky and what's not I would surely be grateful smile    ...just kidding of course
