I have tried alien skin, and also illustrator for blowing up large format images 4ftx10ft, but the results are not great....anyone have any ideas on the best way to blow up images that are 300dpi (8x10) to poster size. Thanks

Consult a professional printer.

A professional printer is your best bet, but you could also try using Genuine Fractals or in Photoshop try just increasing the size in 10% increments, until you reach the size that you need. Basically though, there is no magic way to do it. Massively increasing size will massively decrease quality. Usually that's not too much of a problem as people view such large images from a long way back.
