Mornin all


I have a question about drawing with brushes in Illustrator. I really like the rough, highly textured look that these brushes give but I have had an illustration rejected in the past for too many nodes. Those of you that draw with brushes...do you go through and remove all those nodes and doesn't it then remove most of the texture? It seems to me that it kind of defeats the purpose if you have to remove them. I guess I could leave them as open paths? Would that then be approved? What do you all do? Make your own brushes? Here's an example that I know would be rejected. I was planning to 'paint' the inside of this horse with regular brushes, then flatten but it's the outlines I'd like to preseve the look of.

Hi Diane,
Something I've done (for textures, but it would work just as well for these paths converted to shapes) is to use the "simplify" option, which is in:
Object > Path > Simplify (in Illustrator CS2)
I play with the options until I get a nice balance of a simpler outline and less nodes.
I don't know if it's enough to get all illustrations with lots of nodes accepted but I hope this helps!

Hey Diane, I create my own brushes, keep them fairly simple and cut the paths so that they keep their integrety (sp?) when they are applied to a line. When you say too many nodes, what do you mean? after you have expanded the stroke?

Thanks for your suggestion claudelle. Unfortunately I'd lose the very thing I like about the lines if I simplify, although I've tried.


Yes, Maudie..I meant after I expanded the stroke. I really like the charchol feel of this particular brush in Illustrator. Even if I make my own similar brushes they have tons of nodes after I expand. I guess the best way is to just keep the strokes as open paths.

The custom brushes unfortunately have to be expanded. Have you tried using the simplify with a high percentage, like 98 or 99%?

hmm, no I haven't tried it that high yet. I think I might. I suppose I'll also have to make my own brush.

You can use the brushes in Illustrator, they just need to be expanded before uploading. With a really high percentage in the simplify window, you can cut down on a lot of the points with barely any visible change.

Diane, go to your Document Info window (under the Window menu) and see how many paths and points you have (click the flyout menu on the palette and choose "Objects.") It's interesting to see just how much junk is in there. I can't imagine that your example above would have more points than some of the textured or grunge files here, but maybe the Document Info will alert you.

p.s., I always use Pathfinder>Add after expanding a custom brush stroke to get rid of overlapping shapes.

Thanks for all the help. Cheryl, I keep fprgetting about that info box. It's very helpful. I ended up making my own brush and still simplified it a little. I found that the simplify option can actually add points! LOL I managed to get it below 2700 points for the ink sketch.
