The Movement is on

From the time the clock radio goes off until we finally switch off the late night news and haul ourselves back to bed, everyone in the world swims in symbols, signs, and icons. We're all quite literally looking at pictures all day long.
Of course, some of us are more involved than others with this world of pictures. Some of us make our living creating, selling and discussing images. The world needs to be represented and we're here to do it – distilling the global stock of ideas into something visual, something people will understand. It's a living and we're good at it.
But we do it for something else. Because not every image just goes past us. Sometimes, the picture makes us stop, the photograph arrests us, the drawing makes us forget what we were just doing. We've all had this struck-by-lightning moment with an image.

Roland Barthes calls this arresting potential in imagery the Punctum.

It's the sensation that floods over us, stops us in our tracks and, if only for a second, blots out everything else. We feel something new and indescribable, suddenly alone with the image. Punctum is not the sudden understanding of what the image 'means'. It's our sudden availability, for whatever reason, for the image to create a new meaning in us, just for us. A one-time flash of something we hadn't felt or understood before. For that moment of interaction we are free and flying and somewhere altogether new.

As visual people, we crave this experience. As artists, we long to create it. And today, we have a worldwide movement for our shared love of that struck-by-lightning moment. Join us in creating and celebrating this worldwide day honoring imagery and visual creativity. This isn't just about iStock - for creative people everywhere, Punctum is who we are and what we do.
Thanks to Jeff Howe from Wired magazine, who introduced us to the concept of Punctum. August 19th is also his birthday. Happy Punctum Day, Jeff.

I don't anyone to remind me how much istock and the inspectors have helped me improve as a photographer. I think most of us who have been here for years have all seen our own and each other's talent grow.

The iStockphoto inspectors are all over the world and, for a minute or two, for as long as it takes really, they inspect each and every file that comes aboard here at iStock. One file at a time. Within that process, Time takes a breather and the creative process of each and every contributor rules for a moment. A file comes in for inspection, that image is frozen within the focus of an individual who cares and who will be taking a decision.

That process has proven to help contributors in spectacular ways and actually often leads to people becoming better artists. More than ever, the sense and meaning of it all resides in the inspector’s aptitude to remain perpetually challenged and excited about each and every contributor being able to feel the pride of having data aboard such a complex and intricate structure.

Yes, the inspection team witnesses the growth of individual artists and today, within the context of Punctum Day, we are announcing two more ways to help and assist: The Most Improved Contributor Award and The Contributor Most Deserving of a New Camera Award. As with any image that comes around here, these awards will be selected with a sense of pride and an acute eye for fairness… as Art History is evolving to the next level.

The Most Improved Contributor Award is $5,000; The Contributor Most Deserving of a New Camera Award is a Canon EOS 5D with EF 24-105 L IS and it’s on the house as well.

Cheers, people… and The Movement is on; more later.

Dear Gods of iStock, please consider the Contributor Most in Need of a new Canon 1Ds3 with cash and camera gear..... (hint, it's me)

OMG, I seriously think I'm going to explode with glee. Do you guys think you'll be able to top all of this great news with future F5 announcements Thanks so much!!!!!
Posted Fri Jul 20, 2007 5:56PM

Pick me, pick me, pick me! I definitely urgently require a new camera... !! Sad thing is that I probably don't deserve one!

Great idea for a competition.
