Could I have rescued this in post processing?

It got rejected for lighting issues.

There are blown highlights in the sky that you could repair in PS (subtle clonning in Luminosity blend mode from other detail areas).
Cat eyes could be retouched to eliminate the haze from flash (just haze, not the catchlights) and you could apply some tone adjustment (curves) to better the overall contrast of this image. There are several ways to improve contrast, I do not use the PS standard tool, instead, I use a non destructive Curve Layer at 25% in SoftLight blending mode, this could be a good start. To add light I use the another Curve in 25% in Screen blending mode. Then increase saturation (Nondestrutive layer) about 10%.
