good idea rob. maybe lay out the ground rules for discussion and for those who break them implement a 24-hour "time-out" posting ban. that oughta give them enough time to cool off.

I don't mind seeing political and/or religious discussions here, but I can understand why Rob is trying to be proactive about keeping them civil. These topics tend to spiral out of control more than any other topics (for obvious reasons), and I think a lot of us are drawn to them because of previous trainwrecks we've witnessed. LOL

I think Suzanne's rules are right on the money and could be applied to any and all online discussions. I know I could remind myself of them occasionally.

While I personally am not hugely into politics, I know it's an incredibly important subject to a lot of iStockers. So of course we should be able to discuss it here in the Off Topic forum. There are quite a few people who are able to present their opinions (on both sides) in a way that makes me want to read and actually consider the opposing side. Will you change my mind? Most likely not. But I'm still up for a good discussion as long as it doesn't degrade into personal attacks.

I do have to say that I can't stand the offensive comments that are almost always ended with a smiley face, so I hope those will be kept to a minimum.

Those are the greatest, as if no one else gets the real meaning, and then the poster hides behind the "What? Wasn't it clear I was joking?" defense.

I'm a big fan of American politics - sure, they make my stomach hurt, and I can't do anything about them, but it makes for a helluva spectator event. American politics are much more enjoyable when you have real Americans to discuss them with. So I'm looking forward to being able to come here with all the questions I'm bound to have over the next nine months or so and get a whole spectrum of answers for them.
