I don't mind seeing political and/or religious discussions here, but I can understand why Rob is trying to be proactive about keeping them civil. These topics tend to spiral out of control more than any other topics (for obvious reasons), and I think a lot of us are drawn to them because of previous trainwrecks we've witnessed. LOL
I think Suzanne's rules are right on the money and could be applied to any and all online discussions. I know I could remind myself of them occasionally.
While I personally am not hugely into politics, I know it's an incredibly important subject to a lot of iStockers. So of course we should be able to discuss it here in the Off Topic forum. There are quite a few people who are able to present their opinions (on both sides) in a way that makes me want to read and actually consider the opposing side. Will you change my mind? Most likely not. But I'm still up for a good discussion as long as it doesn't degrade into personal attacks.
I do have to say that I can't stand the offensive comments that are almost always ended with a smiley face, so I hope those will be kept to a minimum.
