I know that the KJV is in the public domain here in the US, but according to a website that was linked from the Technical Wiki:

"Up to 250 verses (inclusive) from assorted books of the NKJV may be quoted in audible (e.g., audio recording, sermons, radio and TV broadcasts) form without written permission as long as the verses quoted do not amount to 50% of a complete book of the Bible and do not make up 50% or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted."

Does that mean we are not allowed to upload a verse only, with no music or any other vocals to go along with it?

I believe the copyright is in the translation and not the text.

So then bible quotes are acceptable?  How about in a different language?

Me and my deep voice. (She stole my idea.)   Actually, I'm sure there are plenty of us already planning to do many of the same things.  The key will be to add our own distinctiveness to what we produce, so the buyers will have lots of options to choose from.  I've got a certain set of varied stylistic ideas in mind for readings of various kinds. Now if I can just find the time to do some of them in the middle of a very busy business schedule in my other life.

Zuki - you've lost me there! When you say "text" do you mean the original Hebrew and Greek?

The original translation of the KJV was completed in 1611, so the translation ought to be public domain. Maybe the one in copyright is the 21st Century KJV? There's an article on its copyright here -

http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/index.php?action=getVersionInfo&vid=48&lang=2

There's also the 1975 version - the New King James Version - info here http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/index.php?action=getVersionInfo&vid=50&lang=2 and full copyright information here http://www.thomasnelson.com/consumer/dept.asp?dept_id=190660&TopLevel_id=190000

The problem is that the language used in the 1611 version is difficult to understand, not least because the meanings of words have changed.

I suspect that under the terms of the 1975 version copyright, you could put up as many verses or chapters onto iStock as you want, since no single work would breech the copyright conditions - it would though, be a problem if someone downloaded a lot of them and combined them into an audio book or similar recording.

Obviously this problem is not just restricted to the Bible - there are lots of books which people might want recordings of - the works of Shakespeare etc. (again complicated by the fact that he's dead, and what we read now are effectively modern translations).

You are right about the KJV but the Technical Wiki nicolesy quoted is referring to the NKJV (New King James Version) which is a recent translation.  This new translation omits the "thees" and "thous" found in the original king james as well as some other modifications.

I suppose you can use the KJV but it would not be very relevant to today's language.

Too bad Charlton Heston recently died. Could you imagine uploading the 10 commands as read by Moses himself?
