Note:
If you're using the Chrome browser (which I recommend!) the easiest way to install this script and keep it up-to-date is to get it from the Chrome store, here.

This is for Chrome and Firefox users (or other folks who can run Greasemonkey scripts in their browsers...I believe some other browsers can, but I don't know much about those).
Ever had a day where someone in the forums just rubs you up the wrong way? Maybe you think I just talk rubbish and you'd rather never read one of my forum posts again. Or you want to spot posts by that really helpful person that you look out for? If so, this is for you.
This script changes the way your browser displays forum posts. Firstly, it adds "+" and "-" buttons under a poster's icon. If you click on a "-" link, every post by that poster is replaced with a short "---Content has been hidden---" text. Click on a "+" link and their post is highlighted in pale green. Not very exciting, but it might help your bloodpressure smile

Up at the very top of a forum thread you'll see Admin and Inspector badges with "+" and "-" buttons underneath. You can use those to highlight/stop highlighting all posts by Admins and Inspectors, should you so wish.

If you're using Chrome, install it from the Chrome store, here.

To install it on Firefox, you need to have the Greasemonkey extension. You can get Greasemonkey from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
Once Greasemonkey is installed go to http://www.theasis.co.uk/iStock/put_an_isock_in_it.user.js
Enjoy.

Thanks for the interest, folks.

I've added a couple of improvements so that as well as being negatively useful (by hiding stuff you don't want to read) it can also be positively useful (by drawing attention to stuff you do want to read).

Rather than hide/unhide options, there's now a green '+' and red '-' icon put under everyone's user icon.  If you click '-', that person is marked as 'less interesting' and '+' marks them as 'more interesting'.  Less interesting people's posts are hidden, more interesting people's posts are highlighted with a pale green background.

At the top of the page are also an Admin badge and an Inspector badge so that you can also mark Admins and Inspectors as 'more interesting' (or 'less interesting' if you're so inclined).  If you mark a badge as more interesting then relevant posts are differently highlighted with a pale orange background in the name column.  If you mark a badge as less interesting, the text is reduced in size rather than hidden.

Maybe a couple of screenshots will make that clearer.

I'll unhide you for two minutes just to reply

Seriously, though - I'm delighted that it's useful for someone other than just me.  You're very welcome.

I've tweaked the script to cope with some changes that happened to the format of the forums, so it should be working again.

Chrome users can install it directly from the Chrome store, here.

Thank you very much for another very useful script. I have two qustions, maybe I missed something in your explanations but I have tried to reread them. I am on Mac, using Firefox and have Greesemonkey intalled. The little "+/-" bottons show up as expected.

1. When I click the +/- under the contributors icon it does what is expected but also takes me to the top of the page. I would like to stay on the post of the forum where I was.

2. Especially in the Critics forum I sometimes want to remove the highlighting from an inspectors post when they demonstrate the processing of an image which I would like to see without extra highlight color. I can't figure out how to do this.

I agree, those are both things that should be made to work properly. It's a pretty old (5 years!) script...I should certainly bring it more up-to-date sometime.
Don't expect me to move very fast on this, but I'll get them done.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Thank you. Another problem the size of the text becomes smalles in highlighte posts. A problem when you are no longer so young.
