![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 11:07AM | Look, my job is to ensure communication continues. Discussions take place. Ideas are exchanged. I hate shutting stuff down, but what I hate more is when certain people make their points by taking cheap shots at other members or outright flame them. If you want to participate in such discussions then by all means, please, continue. However if you do, then you are the first person responsible for keeping your self in check. If you can't handle that responsibility then don't go there. I'd also like to place some responsibility on the OP to help keep people on task. If you start a hot thread and walk away or encourage others to go off the deep end then you are heading into troll territory. If you start a thread with good intentions then please help remind people to stay on task. If you are reading someone else's post and it is coming across like a personal attack try any of the following: - ask for clarification, sometimes this written communication comes off the wrong way - give them the benefit of the doubt, at least the first time - not everyone is a native English speaker, and even those that are make mistakes and misstatements, if you are correcting someone to further their understanding try to do it in a way that doesn't make them look badly - humor is great! but it doesn't always work, if you are going to try it, be prepared to clarify without the snark Don't forget that you've already agreed to the Rules of Conduct, and that the Civics Doc's Forum section pretty well sums things up. I take this line seriously: It's important to remember that iStockphoto expects points and counter-points to be made intelligently and reserves the right to lock or delete threads it feels are going nowhere or damaging the community. Discussing hot issues (like politics and religion) can be fun, funny, engaging, informative, educational and cathartic, but they can also be incredibly divisive if basic respect is not given to all who participate. I try to walk a very fine line moderating these forums and I'm sure some may think I'm too heavy while others think too easy, so it goes, but I do try to do it from the perspective of what I think is best for the community as a whole. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 11:20AM | I don't think you've missed anything. I agree that the lines they take are fair. However, apparently there are some people out there that don't know how to behave. They need a timeout. (Sorry, I'm a mom to preschoolers.) |
