Jodi - it's not an iStock "lypse" or minilypse and I'm not sure if the invitation was extended to only iStockers. It should be so much fun even for socials after reading the update on accommodations and location.

Yellowstone looks really like an amazing event, i wish i could get there, but i cannot plan that much traveling this year, and, at lst, the list is full.

 I am sooo hungry now, they look extremely appetizing, weird with the head and bills included but I'll eat it anyway Are those fried or smoked ?


Rye, no matter what news we get we only hurt ourselves by not uploading (IMO of course) for every image not uploaded by you, me or whomever there will be someone there to fill that spot. 


On the positive side of things, thanks to my delicious wine, I have become more creative, here is the outcome of my last night shoot, hoping it will get accepted.

....damn, I knew there was something wrong with that expression, this is what happens when after years of doing macro of bugs I'm trying to start shooting people Oh well, maybe it can be used in the stool softener commercial ...lol...hey that is a good idea, I will repeat this shot with a roll of toilet paper in my hands !!!


I have a question directed to all of you, can you be so kind and tell me how you guys judge the distance from your subject and decide on what lens to use ? I have look at all of my work and noticed that I either get too close or not close enough, it seems like I cannot find a happy middle. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

 I struggle with this too but have a feeling it is more my own settings than the lens I choose.

Here is a problem, I see a scene, it is filled with a lot of things that come together nicely, now I add a model to it and I am completely lost, too wide and I loose the model, too narrow I loose the background.


Like this shot here, everything is in such a nice balance, enough background and nicely composed model on the front in correct scale and enough detail.





 

Interesting question Chris. For this one I decided "close enough" was making sure to stay just far enough under the roof of the front porch.





To answer a little more seriously, having until recently had a Canon 5DMkII, I was in the habit of centering my subject - whatever/whomever it was - because of the generally better focusing results in the center with that camera. And tended to do a fair amount of cropping in post to "move" my subjects around the frame - or bring them closer. Now that I have the 5DIII, I'm spending more time trying to use more of the corners in my compositions...but very much still learning/experimenting.


To answer your question most directly, I usually use a zoom lens - so usually adjust closer/farther for each shot pretty much as I go. I suspect others will be significantly more scientific/professional in their approaches.

Thanks Ted, maybe that is my problem, all I use is prime lenses, shooting in controlled enviroment is not an issue but when I go outside I panic to the point that I just put my camera away thinking that is just not worth it. I guess it is time to purchase a new lens. I was asking because I was brave enough to sign up for a minilypse in Florida, I will probably end up shooting mosquitos....lol

Chris, it isn't that hard for me, I think how do I want the background to be part of the image, more/less, in focus,out, stuff like that.  My best suggestion is shoot the same thing with different lenses and see what you like, what the effect is.  I only have two lenses, both primes.
