iStockphoto - Logo Training Manual

7.1 - Derivative artwork and autotraced files

Derivative logo designs are designs that have been based on photographs, scans, clip art, 3D renders, graphics found on the Internet, sketches, etc. If you could not have created your design without referring to another image, your final file would likely be considered a derivative work of art.

You are welcome to use your own imagery as a base for your submissions, however uploading logo designs derived from someone else's designs, photography or artwork is strictly prohibited and a violation of the iStock Logo Designer's Supply Agreement and the Logo Transfer Agreement. You cannot use any image you did not create as reference for your design, regardless of whether the reference is a sketch, 3D render, photograph, image found on the Internet, or a scan from a book or magazine.

When uploading logos derived from your own source imagery (sketch, photo, 3D render, etc), you will be asked to include your reference file for the inspection team to investigate. Your reference material can be uploaded as an RGB JPEG file using the 'Model/Property Release' field and will not be available to clients. If your design appears to be a derivative artwork and you have not included your reference material for investigation, your file will be declined.

Continued uploading of logo designs derived from imagery you don't own the copyright to will result in the closure of your account.

iStock does not accept overly simple auto-traced files. Auto-traced files can be very difficult to edit: they add unnecessary points and shapes, create really weird colors, and can make detailed areas too simple. Please stick to the pen tool and use your eye to judge where points should go, rather than relying on a computer to do your work for you. For more information on auto-traced files, please see this article: Points and Paths: Auto-trace dos and don'ts.
