5.5 - Text

You can include text with your logo design. Try to think of a simple, generic term that helps explain what your design is all about: Coffee Shop Day Spa Mechanical Supplies etc. Please ensure you're sticking to generic terms to help avoid any potential copyright or trademark issues. For example, don't upload a logo featuring a burger graphic along with the name McDonald's®.

When choosing a typeface that suits your design it's critical that you own or have the rights to use ANY font that you submit! If you have not created the font yourself, it is your responsibility to research the font that you are using and ensure that you and our client has the right to use that logo. Remember, if you didn't create the font you must be aware of copyright infringement and contractual limitations. This will mean reviewing the licensing agreement that you agreed to when you licensed the font.

Any submissions found to contain fonts that have been improperly licensed or the license agreement restricts the use of the font in a manner incompatible with the sale of the logo to iStock clients will be declined.

If your logo design contains a typeface that you did not create, you will need to tell us what font you used. You will be required to fill in a field indicating the font name. The font name is mandatory and without it we cannot approve your file. We also recommended that you include the optimal character limit for your logo design in your image description (i.e. between 5-18 characters)

It's important to remember that clients may not have the software to edit your files, or may not have the same fonts that you do. Please ensure that you are outlining ALL the text in your file prior to submission. You may also wish to avoid making alterations to the typeface because the client will likely want to add their own company name to the logo after purchasing. A client may not be able to do the same text modifications that you can. Keep your text usage simple and remember the client may not be as design savvy as you are. Logos that are heavily reliant on text (or include a typeface that you created) will be less interesting to clients who likely already have a business name.

DO

  • Ensure you own the font copyright (in other words, you created the font yourself) or you licensed the font with commercial rights to use the font for a logo for resale. Remember, there are many 'free' fonts that cannot be used in commercial applications
  • Tell us what font you used
  • Include a character limit for your logo design (i.e. between 5-18 characters)

DO NOT

  • Submit logo designs containing fonts that you do not have the rights to use for commercial purposes
  • Submit logo designs with actual company names, which can cause legal issues (i.e. a graphic of a burger with the name McDonald's)
