19th-century portrait of Louis XIV (1638 -€“ 1715), who was also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1643 until his death. His reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest of any monarch of a major country in European history. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” dumped 342 chests of British tea into the harbor. Galileo had been found guilty of heresy by the 1633 Inquisition, for writing that the Earth revolves around the Sun. When Milton met him, Galileo was blind and sequestered under house arrest.
