Description

There are continually emerging problems of new diseases, pests, predators, etc. of honey bees, which the modern beekeeper , hobbyist or full time farmer have to cope with. One recent example is the appearance of the Asian hornets in western Europe. They will forage on flowers if necessary, but their preferred diet is luscious honey bees returning to their hives from foraging flights; they hover in front of the hives, pounce on an unsuspecting returning bee and carry it away to eat at leisure! This photo shows a closeup of a nest tucked in under the roof overhang of a dwelling. The nest is constructed from chewed mud and the beautiful surface structue is a joy to behold. The entrance hole can be seen near the top with a single insect about to enter.
